[color:"orange"]Can a driver problem cause intermittent crashes?[/color]
Yes, though usually driver problems are more consistent. Between the drivers, DirectX, the game and Windows itself, there is plenty of opportunity for weird glitches and conflicts.
Some people with laptops have had better luck with the third party optimized
Omega drivers (for ATI Radeon or Nvidia Geforce graphics chipsets).
Did you check the tests in the Display tab of dxdiag? You could try updating DirectX; it may fix some problems / conflicts, or just update things which could solve your problem.
Have you recently installed any video filters? At least the
ReClock DirectShow Filter needs to be disabled to play the game videos. One person also had a problem with a video codec, but it was installed as part of a codec package, so there was no easy way to narrow down which one.
In Windows Explorer, if you browse to the '
..\Beyond Divinity\Static' folder, can you view the '
intro.mpg' video?
When starting BD, as soon as you hear the intro video, try clicking the left mouse button or hitting escape to bypass it. Does that help, or just speed up the crash?
What resolution is the game set to? How about your desktop? Some people have had problems with DirectX's resolution switching, which could be avoided by having the game and desktop resolutions be the same. These cases triggered a crash before the intro video was played, though, not after.
BTW, the patch Lady_Rain described is included with SP2, if you have installed that already.
