Larian Studios
Hi,

I play this game for one month now every time with a friend. We are both playing with our own Switch and we connect with wireless connection. We had sometimes crashes but it was a pretty rare.

Yesterday we updated the game with the Order&Magic that you released yesterday. We played like 8 hours and we had at least 15 crashes... I think there is something wrong in the update that makes the game crashes. The screen freezes and the switch says "the software stopped working".

It really kills the experience of the game as we had to load the games several times... And it's not fast.

Please Can you fix this?

Thanks!

Best regards,

Furyan
Hi, just wanted to chime in with something similar - I've been playing solo on switch for about a month with zero issues, it's been excellent. After the very recent update I'm getting somewhat frequent crashes, always during battle - it freezes then closes to dashboard with "the software has stopped working". I've been able to push through with frequent saves. The crash doesn't seem to have an obvious trigger, sometimes it's during a massive visual effect heavy battle but it also occurs during smaller scraps without many enemies. Occasionally audio bugs will accompany this but not every time. Reloading and replaying the section always works but I may get another crash at a later point in the same battle.

Overall I'm having the best time playing this monster, it's so much fun I can't believe I didn't play it sooner. So I figure the least I can do is report the issue to help out. I've been recommending friends give it a try and I'll continue to do so, but I'll also be looking for the next patch! Thanks for reading!
Having the same issue. 50 hours in and now freezing every 5 mins and crashing since the recent update. I regret installing it. Extremely frustrating!!!

It seems to be always during a battle. Never happens outside of battling.
I have the pet pal mod activated but that's it. Please fix this Larian.

Furyan87, TTL Crim;
Thank you for the reports, and details.

binkers987;
Is the freezing temporary, or permanent?

Does this happen, or happen as often, if you load earlier saves, if available?

If anyone want to test, if you start the game from a different user account, if available, and start a new game, do you have the same problem in a new game, checking out the combat in the tutorial and early Fort joy? A different account would give a separate drive space for saves.
It seems permanent. I deleted the game and redownloaded and it still persists. If I load earlier saves it still.freezes. It's always during a battle. Doesnt matter on who the battle is with. Are there any other fixes I can try to recoup my game? I'm almost done with reapers coast
Hi,

Been playing for a month or so, had extremely rare crashes (maybe 4 in total). Since yesterday's update, the game has crashed consistently after 1-60 seconds of play. The game is absolutely unplayable for me right now. Based on this thread, this seems to be a widespread issue. Please react quickly and find a solution, possibly reverting the update or something like this.

Thanks.
For everyone here, has the game ever crashed on you in the middle of SAVING (be it manual or auto-save)? Happens to me a lot in ACT IV, and believe you me, it's almost equally frustrating.
Hasn't happened to me before nor after the update. Game only crashes during fights after the update for me. That being said, I'm in ACT 2 right now.

Before the update, the only times the game crashed (froze in fact and I had to manually close application) was sometimes if I opened up character or actions menu (rz / lz) while other stuff is happening (scripted events / conversations) then sometimes the game froze and became unresponsive.
For me it's never occurred during a save, it's always during or after an action takes place in battle. We'll see however, because I'm quicksaving all the time now to get through fights that crash...
Love this game, in fact I created an account just to post here because I am having the same issues since the recent update. Been playing solo for the past month with zero issues, now after update the game freezes while in combat and crashes back to home screen with message "the software has stopped working because an error occured".

Seems to be random when it happens during the fight but usually on an enemies turn (either casting or moving), currently I can't get through a single battle without crashing, this has happened 5 times or more. No issues with saving and I'm not using any mods. I would be happy to go back to life before the update if that's an option, either way please fix this so I can continue the journey!

Thanks,
Sogzilla
I have the same problem, since the update, the game constantly crashes during battles.
I played so far more than 120 hours on the Switch, never had problems, since the update, it's crashing regularly.
This update is really buggy. Please do something. Fix it.
Hi, I just created the account because I have exactly the same problem, I've been playing the game for almost a month without problems, currently on Act IV, but since downloading the update I've at least 10 crashes, they always happen when I am in a fight, and It has become pretty frustrating. I was playing on Act IV before the update and there were no crashes, that's why I believe it's definitely the update, please help us with this problem, it's making me feel regretful of my purchase of what was an amazing RPG.
Created an account to say that I’m having the same issue since the update. Game crashed twice in a row. Screen freezes first. Had quite a few crashes even before the update but it’s gotten worse since the update. Game has become unplayable until this is fixed :(
Game is almost unplayable now. I've had multiple fights where I simply crash every time I load and redo a few moves. I've cleared the cache and done a *full* power cycle on the switch and nothing has changed.
Exactly the same issue as you all. After the update the game crashes mid fight, on my turn or on enemies turns, to the point of the game being unplayable. The crashes happen, I think, when I use skills or actions, but it could just as well be random. The crashes are not consistent with a certain character. My crashes occurred in relatively big fights, with lots of enemies on the field (>5). I am currently in act II, I play in docked mode.

It happens very frequently to the point of where the game is unplayable. I cannot provide a save game as I do not have the steam version of the game.

I hope you can fix the issue soon, I love the game and I want to continue playing.

This issue is currently being investigated. One person has provided a save, and another said they would when they were able, but more wouldn't hurt, if possible (especially saves where it is more likely to be able to reproduce the crash, or it consistently crashes with certain actions).

For people who also have the Steam version of the game, and linked their account on the Switch, you can email applicable saves (or a Dropbox or Google drive link, etc) to supportdos2@larian.com.
Each save is a folder in the '..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition\PlayerProfiles\<ProfileName>\Savegames\Story' folder.
In Windows Explorer you can zip a file or folder by right clicking on it/them and selecting 'Send To | Compressed (zipped) Folder' (and similarly in OSX/Finder).

Otherwise, hopefully the descriptions will help QA in trying to reproduce this problem (it was not encountered while testing the update).
Having the same issues, will provide as much detail as possible:
Happened 3 times in a row last night, all during the same fight (in the ambush by elementalist summoners west of Driftwood), all during enemy turns.
I had activated the "mysterious vendor" and the "bag organizer" mods from the latest update, but only "pet pal" and "endless runner" mods from previous git bag.

Does it matter what you are doing (combat or not, standing still without opening the inventory, etc), or where (near NPCs or surfaces, outdoors or a small interior, etc)?

So far this issue has not been reproducible. QA is continuing to test combat in the Switch version, but if anyone has saves they can provide, especially any saves where crashes are more frequent, or where there are particular actions that can be taken to (at least somewhat reliably) cause a crash, please do so.
If you have such saves, but don't have the Steam version to use the cross save feature, please contact support anyway.
Hello, I'm able to reproduce a crash on switch when fighting against/with the Advocate on the blood Island.

First time, I succeeded the eloquence test and start a fight against the void creatures. First turn was OK, but once it was the Advocate turn again (not 100% sure it was his turn) it crashed.
I tried a second time, and it crashed again.

I abandoned the idea of doing this fight, and did the advocate quest: fighting the black ring around the tree. No problem with this fight.

Then, I finished the Johan quest, fighting the Advocate (near the tree), and it crashed again during the 2nd turn when it was the Advocate turn again.

Tell me if you want my save, but I don't have this game on steam.
Yesterday I played for 3.5 hours without any crash in handheld mode, I finished a fight that I couldn't finish before due to constant crashing. The battery started running out so I put it in docked mode, the game immediately feels more sluggish, after 5 minutes a crash happened, in the witch's basement near driftwood (no combat). There was no combat, but a lot of visual effects on the screen (toxic), I think that might be the trigger.

- So, it might be worth checking out docked mode.
- Engage in combat with a lot of casters (scarecrow fight, on my save).
- Check out area's with lots of visual effects (Basement of witch with exploding rats)
Hi,
I registered to also provide feedback about this issue. I am not able to get through a particular battle in Reapers Cove, where Ifan ben-Mezd spawns after being spun in webs by the spider soon after entering the cave.
Currently Ifan is dead, and every time I go in there with my three other companions, I get a crash when there is too much flames on the screen, and a creature either takes massive damage or dies from fire. When this happens, the screen seizes up, and I get the same crash to the switch home screen. It is a totally reproducable crash in a single battle.
I can't continue with the game until I manage to resue Ifan, so I'm pretty much stuck until this issue is resolved.
I'd be happy to give this Switch save over if I knew the process of doing so.

Thanks!
M
I am surprised QA can't reproduce this, over 50% of fights I do end up crashing, usually bigger ones with more visual effects where the game lags a bit and usually while casting a spell with visual effect. Any fights with multiple characters and a few environmental effects life fire, electrified water, steam and such will usually crash. It also seems like playing very slowly reduces the chance of crashing. So find a fight thats been reported to crash, get the most environmental effects everywhere and cast a ton of spells very quickly. Thats a 90% chance of crash on my switch. Handheld mode for me, havent tried dock mode.

If youve done all of this numerous times and never experienced any crash, I can see 2 possibilities: your QA are working on a setup different than us (not a basic switch or something) or the crash occur only on certain other unknown conditions possibly unrelated to the game like the amount of space left on the switch, some other games installed or not or whatever other weird interaction.
Played 5 hours today in handheld mode, I experienced only 1 crash at the oil rig battle with lots of visual effects.

For me the crashing seems way less frequent in handheld compared to docked but it is still there.
The switch does perform differently depending on whether it is docked or not; 1080p vs 720p, over/under clocking of the GPU. So if the crashed are caused by visual effects, that could explain why at least I experience a difference between docked vs undocked. If QA tests the game undocked and has to play for +5 hours (like I did today) to experience a crash, I don't find it strange that they cannot reproduce this.

I just had another interesting crash, this time a hanging issue.

I was in Driftwood, bartering with the weapon vendor. I pressed to accept the trade when I had forgotten to balance beforehand and the game hung. I know this because while the characters appeared to do their idle animations, the incessant audio about the void-fish was gone. I had to manually close the game and reopen.
I also want to report that my game is crashing in nearly every fight now.

I'm on Switch Lite. Have been playing fine for around 20 hours until updating to the most recent patch. I'm in Act 2 and the game crashes in nearly every battle. Clearing Cache, reinstalling etc. did not work.

There might be a correlation I've noticed that it crashes when big explosions happen on screen but I've also noticed crashes in regular battle activity.

I think the patch should be reverted. The game is unplayable for me currently.

I play on the original Nintendo Switch, and before the update, no matter how much stuff was happening on the screen, the game didn't crash....but instead dropped frames massively. The game rarely crashed in battle, and crashed just a few times outside of battle, that is, until ACT IV (be wary), where the game started crashing while SAVING around 65%~70% of the time, which pretty much caused me to stop playing because whatever accomplishments I made before attempting to save would be lost (not saved). I've already submitted my Nintendo Switch cloud save file to the developers; now that this new update is out, hopefully, they can finally delve into our crashes.

Now with this new update, I can only imagine how terrible it would run if I boot up the game again...so that'd be frequent crashes in battle on top of crashing during the saving/auto-saving process, which equates to an absolutely unplayable game. Technically speaking, I can only suspect that there are some nasty memory leaks and/or multi-threading tasks that get bogged up which causes the software to crash on the Nintendo Switch.

I wish the development team the best of luck in releasing a performance patch for the Nintendo Switch version soon.
Hi !

Same story here, been playing for something like 30 hours and it keeps crashing during fight. It's very frustrating. It doesn't seem that there is a pattern in how it crashes it's just in plain middle of fights. I tried 5 time to kill "Mordus" but it always crashes at some point of the fight.

It's a shame cause I really love the game, you guys did an amazing work and i'm sure it will be fixed !

Thanks and good luck working on that !

For those having at least moderately frequent crashes in combat, does the game also crash in Arena mode combat?
I haven't tried Arena mode yet. I play solo adventure only.
More infos about my systematic crash with the Advocate fight crash:

- I play in handheld mode
- I don't play in english but in French (texts only)
- Tactician difficulty
- 0 mods enabled
- Play with red lizard (main), ifan, fauve and sebille
- Level 16 with 3 source points, end of act2, around 110h playing

Maybe some of you could find some similarity with my setup.
Handheld, tactician, 0 mods, sebille solo lone wolf aero/hydro, act 2 lvl 12, playing in english but I live in quebec city.
Created an account just to state that I'm having the same issue. This is incredibly frustrating. Game ran great before. Now I'm considering just quitting altogether with how much time I've wasted on load screens from all the crashing
Hello,
I also have created an account just to state that I have the same problem’ since this update. Really really frustrating, around 100h playing... Same thing when i take an old save... impossible to continue playing...

Does anyone have news from Larian? Can we do something??

Thx

This is being actively investigated, with QA trying to reproduce this (on various systems and configurations, mostly unsuccessfully), the Switch programmers looking into anything that changed in the last update on Switch and other programmers looking in to everything that changed, in case this is a global problem, but only causing crashes on Switch due to the limited resources.

Is any one else experiencing (preferably frequent) crashes living in or near Dublin, Gent, Kuala Lumpur, Quebec City or Saint Petersburg? I will have to check on this, but it may be possible to arrange a visit to a studio (if there is somewhere available with no top secret stuff around) or a meeting somewhere with a programmer/QA. Debugging options are limited on retail Switch versions, through, so there is a limit to what could be done by anyone outside of the Switch developers.
Hello,
i registered to report i have also very frequent crashes after the update, from Germany, 80 hours in.
It happens mostly after selecting a spell or when a spell is being casted. Also happens while / shortly after a character was hit.
Most crashes occured in the oil mine with a lot of fire effects.
I love this game so much i hope it will be fixed soon, cant play any further, very frequent, sometimes as soon as a save was loaded in a fight.
Hi everyone,

Sorry to say that but I'm glad we are not the only one to have these issues wink
So we both play on two docked switch and we don't crash at the same time. I usually crash during battles or just after finishing one and my friend crashes at random moments.

When we updated the game, we were just before completing the quest called A Web of Desire where Dorotya changes herself into a spider. We have tried to complete this battle like 4 times but it crashed everytime. Now we have regurlary crashes during battles and we make a lot of quicksave to avoid losing time.

@Raze : We live in Liège, 2 hours from Gent if needed!

Best regards,

Furyan
I live in quebec city and experience frequent crashes during fights. What can I do?
Came here to say that sometimes the animation for the Impalement skill doesn’t show- the game will just pause for a second and then the oil surface suddenly appears. Reloading the game doesn’t always fix this. I don’t know if this issue is related to the game crashing for everyone else. (Switch version)
I've been having crashes happening more and more frequently since the update, with the latest one today being after using cloak and dagger teleport outside combat (up until that point all other crashes were in combat)
I've already reported my issue, but what I'm wondering is if this only affects games/saves that existed prior to the upgrade.

I'm going to wager that the QA/test infrastructure probably has more 'escape-proof' design with regards to fresh games, as opposed to prior saves.

Has anyone who's had this problem tried a fresh game? Has it fared any better? Just curious is all.
Registered to also report crashing bug. Play handheld only on original switch.

Roughly 40 hours played before update with maybe 1 crash in that time. After installing update and enabling some mods, game now crashes almost immediately at the start of or within 5 minutes of any battle. Act 2 for reference, have tried several fights/areas. Almost all crashes occur when another enemy attacks, does not always correlate to strong/flashy elemental attacks. Latest crash several minutes into mill fight trying to get to Roost. At least three crashes here.

Tried several things (rebooting switch, going to different areas, selling items, etc.) and would estimate I've received the crash 15 times before I've had to give up due to frustration. Love the game and I while I doubt this feedback helps but I wanted to contribute.
Hello,

I also have the same problem. It crashes almost every fight. I'm always playing in handheld mode. I live in Montreal. I've seen a few people from Montreal and Quebec in here... Could the problem be specific to a region?

QA has found a situation where the crash can be reproduced, and the programmers are narrowing down the exact cause.
Any additional saves where this can be reproduced would help with identifying the problem and testing potential fixes.

Unfortunately, there is limited debugging possible with retail versions of the Switch, so being near a studio is probably not going to be much help.

That may be related; others have not reported skill effects being missing, but a couple of people have mentioned textures rendering slowly, and if a skill animation is delayed too long it may be skipped. The crashes are also skill related for a lot of people.

At least one person reported starting a new game and still getting crashes. The problem is looking like a GPU issue, as well, rather than a problem in the saves themselves (in the latter case, QA probably would have had an easier time reproducing the crashes).

I think more people are just mentioning their location if they live near a Larian office.

Is there a way for an individual player to roll back the update so we can confirm the issues is due to the update or not, while using the same save? Or is the update built into the savegame now and it's impossible to separate the two?

Like others, I created an account to add my voice to the chorus. Game crashing constantly during combat in act 2 in Stonegarden on the switch. Playing handheld mostly. Had worked flawlessly for the previous ~25 hours but now am having all kinds of crashes in combat. Such a bummer. Was really enjoying the game up until this point but now progress has been halted. Hope there is a fix soon.
Hi, just created the account to respond. I live in Dublin if it can help.
Continually crashing since entering act two. Also signed up just to report this.

I’m playing with cross save enabled, and a number of the larian mods turned on. I have a solo build. Haven’t yet been able to complete the battle in blackpits. It always crashes before I’m able to finish the battle.

A lot of times when restarting the app (all times I think), I’m told saves mismatch and then I download the latest from cloud. Even though all saves had previously synchronised without issue.

Game has become unplayable which is such a shame.

Issue occurs both *docked and undocked*. Mainly only ever in fights. Has even been in small fights. Was happening continually at the fights with the hanging just outside of town a few times also.

I don't think there is any way to roll back updates. If there was, an earlier version of the game would be able to load saves made in the previous game version, but not any made since the last update.

Please email supportdos2@larian.com with your save(s) in or before that battle (whatever saves are the most reliable for crashing), or a Dropbox or Google drive link, etc.
Once synced to PC, each save is a folder in the '..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition\PlayerProfiles<ProfileName>\Savegames\Story' folder.
In Windows Explorer you can zip a file or folder by right clicking on it/them and selecting 'Send To | Compressed (zipped) Folder' (and similarly in OSX/Finder).

Currently we only have one situation where the crashes can sometimes be reproduced, so additional saves where we can reproduce this will speed up testing of a workaround, and help confirm the cause of the crashes.
Will do! Just gotta get the Mac setup. Have been exclusively gaming on Switch.
Does it need to be a steam bought version to cloud sync saves? Or can I do it using my gog version in steam?

Unfortunately, the GOG version can not sync to Steam's cloud service, and the Switch cross saves only work with Steam.
My Switch version v3.6.51.133 crashes at the same spot battling possessed dwarves on Reaper's Coast. It's an expensive letdown so I hope that they do something to compensate or fix it.
Hello,

@Raze, is there any way to extract the save files from the Switch? I don't have the game on Steam and thus I can't send any save files to you through m'y PC.

Thanks !
Hi,

How can I help with debugging this issue?

There is a fix being tested now, and a patch being prepared for submission.

Furyan87;
Unfortunately, the only way to get the saves off the Switch is with the Steam cross save function.

Asar_BS;
There isn't any debugging left to do. Additional saves where this is reproducible couldn't hurt, but I'm not sure they would speed up the patch testing.
Update..Got my first crash a few moments ago. I just arrived at reapers coast and met meistr siva, and the game froze in the battle shortly after.

As for slow loading textures, every once in a while I notice certain ground textures ( like the wooden floorboards in some driftwood interiors) taking maybe 20+ seconds to finish rendering.
I want to say that I’m really happy that the team has worked so hard to try and get this fixed. Hopefully the testing proves good and we get a patch soon. It’s been hard not playing the game the last week or so. It really is otherwise an extraordinarily good (and challenging) game.
It seems they are taking this seriously and are trying to fix it. I have been enjoying this game and it has provided me lots of hours of entertainment. This is only the second title I've bought for the Switch. The first game I bought was an RPG and way too short so this game has been great. It took me forever to get out of Fort Joy, which is a good thing. At first I was pretty upset but now that Larian has responded so promptly to concerns, I have more confidence that they are trying to make it right.
Yeah, I'd like to also say support have very helpful and communicative about this. Looking forward to getting back into the game!
after 30 hours of gameplay on Nintendo, crashing has made the game unplayable. As others have said, seems to have started after latest update. In act 2. Occurs during battles (often with flames) and out of combat when there is a lot of elements being displayed; explosions. hope this is fixed soon, crashed 7 times in an hour an a half, unable to progress.

The patch was submitted yesterday, so should be approved within 5 business days. We requested an expedited approval process, but an exception doesn't appear likely.
Praise be, can't wait for that to hit. Thanks for keeping us filled in on what's going on
Likewise I really appreciate these updates, and all the time sensitive work that's required to get my new favorite game back on track!
Thanks for fix and status updates :hihi:
Hello all! The patch is now live.
Yes! Thanks for making it happen. Impressed with the response here. Looking forward to getting back into the game.
Thanks! I haven’t had any problems since updating and the framerate in large battles seems better too.
I've just downloaded the patch, and I'm HAPPY to report that the game seems to have stopped crashing during the saving process!! I haven't been able to continue playing until now (one month has passed since I ran into serious crashing issues), and it feels GREAT to be able to play Divinity: Original Sin 2 again on my Nintendo Switch!! Also, I've noticed that overall performance of the game has increased by around ~15% with this patch. smile

Thanks to Larian's awesome dev team who were able to address these issues so quickly! Also special thanks to Raze for being such an awesome communicator for the entire team and all players! Man, somebody get this guy a succubus! ;D
Hey guys ! I wanted to tell that we dont have crash anymore thanks to the patch!
What a relief!

Thanks Raze for the updates during that issue!

Regards,

Furyan
Patch seems to have fixed the crashes! Also the game seems like it's running smoother now in general? Not sure but it *seems* better
I have no more crashes with this fix. Thank you !!
I am very interested in the technical part of what was the problem. Could you give a little inside information on what exactly caused the crash?
I have time to test patch yesterday and I don't have crash any more.

The crashing was due to a GPU memory buffer issue. It was hard to reproduce due to slight differences with development hardware (we can test with retail hardware, but there is not really any way to get any debug into then).
Hello,

I wanted to express my thanks to those at the studio for working to patch this issue. While the main issue of crashes has been resolved, I have noticed another minor issue that has emerged with this patch. One thing I have noticed during playthroughs is how certain visual effects like fire, smoke, the new erratic entities and etc, have a tendency to "flicker" on and off which can either be distracting or make it difficult to tell at a glance if someone is being affected by status conditions or not.
I wanted to inform those at the studio that this has been a minor issue I've been experiencing since the patch and am hoping will to some degree be resolved.

Thank you for taking the time to read my feedback.

Try clearing the system cache, if you have not done so since the hotfix: in the Home menu open System Settings, then select System, Formatting Options, Clear Cache and then the current user.
Note that this will also reset the system language and brightness setting.

I'll check with the Switch programmers if this is a known issue (haven't seen it reported before).

The next update should include changes to some textures, and a change in how they are compressed (new version of a Nintendo SDK).

this is getting beyond a joke.

After playing exactly one hour I crashed. (switch)

It happens every hour on the dot.
I am getting p****d with it.

playing on pc doesn't crash at all....

something needs to be done because I am unable to finish reapers Coast

Fort joy 0 crashes.
reaper over the top crashes. If I had the game card wouldn't be an issue but because it was only release as limited we have to put up with the bs crashing.

It happens every Hour on the hour.

I was about to help the little boy's mum on the bridge but... CRASH! stopped that.

I am getting to the stage where I won't be playing it because this is getting beyond a joke.

I have even cleared the cache but doesn't help.
fresh install doesn't help.

trying moving game from sd card to the console itself.
(don't have high hopes for this either)
nope still crashed...
Hi there. I'm sorry to hear this. I had a frequently crashing problem on the Switch that was solved by redownloading the game -- but it sounds like that didn't solve it for you.

Do you get an error code with the crash?

Have you tried playing with your Switch in airplane mode? At least that could eliminate network access.

And have you emailed supportdos2@larian.com with this?
The regularity of the crashes on the Switch has made this game unplayable. Early in the game a crazy was very rare, but since getting to Arx, the game crashes very often. It crashes most of the time during a quick save. So before that quick save is able to finish, the game crashes. I lose quite a bit of progress.....and saving the game has become the most nerve wracking part vs the tough battles. Any fix on the way?
