Ascaron released a patch which removed the protection tages from sacred underworld , so why did the devs of this game give up on us and keep starforce?. I still have the game sitting on the shelf and i refuse to replay it again because of starforce. It was starforce that came with x3 reunion that killed my cdrw drive!.
But again even the devs of x3 reunion put a patch out that meant you could play the game without starforce.
Anyway of me getting a nocd for this game ? sigh!

I believe, if I TRULY want to be hated by someone,
then I should rename myself into "Starforce".

[color:"orange"]so why did the devs of this game give up on us and keep starforce?[/color]
Most of the problems with Starforce only came to light after the final patch was done.
When Larian added the Starforce copy protection to the game (shortly before release) it caused a few problems, which they then had to fix. If they remove the copy protection they would have to go back and undo all the changes, check anything that uses any of the code that was changed and then do a full round of quality control testing before being able to release it. They probably have not looked at any of the code for the couple years since the final patch, so it would take awhile just to get started, besides being fairly resource intensive. Sacred Underworld and X^3 Reunion are newer games, still being patched anyway, so there is not a lot of extra testing required due to removing the copy protection.
I have not seen any mention of a no-CD hack for BD in the forum (except one specific to the Polish localization). I don't know if there are any workarounds in general for Starforce copy protection, but haven't looked, either.

The only work-around is through a program called Game Jackal to the best of my knowledge...
The game doesnt remove any copy protection, nor does it bypass the need for an original authentic cd, but it does allow you to create a game-profile that allows you to after the 1st successful load of the game, to pack away your cd and never need it again.
in a nutshell what it does is it "mimics" the code sent back to the copy protection program when you load the game successfully the first time. It then resends those save "responses" to the copy protection system the next time you want to load, which means you dont need the cd again.
I was able to play bd with game jackal on vista..... BUT (and this is a big BUT), it was because my profile was created while still running winxp. and it only worked when i upgraded my os to vista (32 bit version)... when i later did a clean install and then tried to reload BD, i was unable to load the game and SF successfully... and couldnt play it again.

Well, now that StarForce can be removed, I can now consider buying this game.
Of course, no online stores have it anymore, so I have to go to eBay instead. Good for me, since the price is a fraction of what I would have likely paid otherwise - probably not so good for Larian. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
I suppose I should be thanking Starforce for saving me money here - but I would rather ask Larian to have more consideration for players in future, by ensuring that DD2 (or whatever it is named) ships without any onerous CD-checks...

You could buy the German version as well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Only drawback : It's in German language. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />
