I'm probably just making stupid conjectures and presumptions, but while Hellbird and me were taking a look at the site and screenshots.
First obvious thing is of course the fact that when you enter the site, there are 2 persons at the top of the site, the deathknight on the left. The one on the right, wearing something like a t-shirt: you. Someone already pointed this out, I know, and you could argue about it being a modern t-shirt or not, but it looks very modern to me. So, the deathknight and then you. So, you are a modern person? On the other hand, that also doesn't fit in with you being able to be a female character, but I guess that's a design thing.
So I guess the deathknight is always with you and since there's "total control of party members" in the FAQ, you can control him, right? So we'll be basically playing with 2 characters instead of 1? But how does that work for a game that keeps using the "real-time combat system"?
Now, then about the 'modern' setting. First of all, the landscape on the screenshots look very much like some Planescape things... Like The Abyss plane even. Not exactly modern, but also not exactly the more medieval Divinity style, imho. So, are we going to run through universes? Then maybe we accidently got stuck out of modern time in some other universe, with a deathknight connected to us?
And then there was the rumour about a part of the city of Gent being recreated in a future game by Larian... ?

Hyr & Hellb.

From far, from eve and morning and yon twelve-winded sky, the stuff of life to knit me blew hither: here am I. Now -for a breath I tarry nor yet disperse apart- take my hand quick and tell me, what have you in your heart.

Yes, so is there maybe a modern parallel world next to the more medieval setting of the Divinity world, where you can go to through the rift?

it's noyt a t-shirt as i thought.
Marian, has pointed that out at this link

and this text a found on the riftrunner site :

[color:"red"] You are a servant of the Divine - scourge of necromancers and sorcerers alike. Your purpose in life is to fight all that is evil using any means possible. Your dilemma… during an intense battle with one of the great necromancers, a demon drags you into its universe. There you are soul-forged with a Death-knight. You are cursed and destined to spend the rest of eternity bonded to this creature of evil.
Or maybe not...

The Death-knight dislikes the soul forging as much as you do and together you embark on a great adventure. You both have a common goal - to undo the soul forging. You and your unlikely companion quickly figure out that the only way to rid this curse is if you unlock the secret of riftrunning – an ancient art that allowed the prison universe’s indigenous population to travel between universes.

Your quest is set: To become a Riftrunner!
[/color]

what's this univers? some kind of hell hole? or timelines as well?
i beginning to think more an more that the future wouldn't have annything to do with riftrunner

Hmm, hadn't read that bit of text yet. So, looks indeed like modern times have nothing to do with it. Still, the tunic looked much like a t-shirt... or maybe it was just to stress his muscles, who knows? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Of course we only saw pictures of Act I yet. I wonder which other places we'll get to visit. Bah, hurry up there, larian!

Oh well, if it isn't the future, maybe it's a good idea for a future game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

There aren't a lot of rpg mixing future and medievalstyle very good, I think larian could make a good score there <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" />

T-shirt, t-shirt... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> It can't be a t-shirt, because there is no "T"! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" /> (those semi-sleeves are missing) I mean, if you really need to complain, get your arguments straight, mkay? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

And now, to quote Donnie: forget about it! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif" alt="" /> (yeah, this belongs in the one-liner thread, I know, I know <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> )

i believe the proper terminology...
in the states anyway. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />...it's known as
"a wife-beater shirt", i was shocked..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eek.gif" alt="" />
up here in Canada,we call it a muscle shirt......
a much nicer name.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
so back then we'll refer to it as
a "muscle tunic beater" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" />
nevermind "T-shirt" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" />
