In chapter 1 of the story campaign there is a limit of 50 gold and 30 research points you can accumulate at a time. In single player (story or custom) you'll start running out of political stuff on the Raven if you take too long to complete the game, and possibly make the end too easy. There are no specific penalties, though.

Well, I'm on my second campaign play-through and I just finished Act II. I have over 1500+ gold, 100+ cards and all research is done. All the princess story is done. Each general has done their side-stories. Honestly I don't even want to start Act III as it will be a total joke and there is nothing to look forward to. So, I guess you could call that a consequence.

i took 83 turns first time round and still had political stuff so its not to bad

so just play without farming right?

Yes. Play normally and you should have enough stuff.
