Not quite sure I know which you're asking about, but that could just be the fact that I'm running on a double latte, a Bawls, and a heaping tablespoon of Guarana(sp?). I'm SOOO tired right now :P Anyway, built-ins have some ups, but many downs. The up side is that they produce little heat compared to separate cards, they leave a slot open for extra cards to be installed, and being made for that specific setup, don't often have conflicts. Their downs, well... If they ever go out, it often causes problems with the rest of the board, they often conflict when trying to install cards whether you disable them or not, they are very often below standard and many chipsets are not supported by some applications(though eMachine began packaging GeForce4 chipsets in some of their PCs). For example, FFXI refuses to run on ATI Rage MOBILE and many other built-ins. They take up board area that could be used for other components to improve board performance and if you choose to use a card in place of the onboard, it's wasted silicon. In the case of video chipsets they often have very limited RAM, or even worse, share RAM which is slower than dedicated video RAM and otherwise impacts systemwide performance. Again, just my opinion.

What's been suggested to me was having a Creative Labs sound card on-board an Athlon motherboard. I'm concerned, because of the constant recourse to sound in most games (especially Morrowind), and wondering whether that's going to cause the motherboard to take a hit in any respect.

I know there seems to be universal derision to inbuilt sound, but I havent had a problem. Morrowind runs silky smooth. Even with my nearing 200 mods :P

I'm looking at 125+ when I get my new system in place, and depending upon how stable it is, I'll probably add in several RAM gulpers: sound, nicer textures, etc.

I bought Morrowind because a mate of mine loved it, it looks excellent, sounds beautiful but I found it all too confusing and way to big. too much to remember but kept it anyway, also never quite knew where or what I was supossed to be doing. the open end of the game was fun but got boring quickly for me. Does anyone remember " Lands of Lore " (now there was a game) never finished it but got to the White Castle (too hard even back then).

Might give Morrowind another go, if someone could give me a helping hand on the whole apsect of the game, can one do whatever one wants etc?

Cheers

Pretty much, yes. There is a plot, but you can certainly choose to ignore it. Aside from that plot, it is an openended game. Even the quests that involve rising to the top of a particular House or faction are open-ended in a sense, and you can choose to build your character successfully from a number of different vantage points.

For what it's worth, we're going with a separate sound card, now: an Audigy, though I'm not sure which he's recommending. That, plus the Athlon 64-bit 3 GHz CPU, 1 GB RAM, and an Athlon motherboard. Frankly, I wish it was in place yesterday, but I suspect it will be another 2 weeks before it's in place.

Thanks for replying, okay so I will re-install it, but I was wondering, you seem to know lots about this game, which charcter would you sugest a new player start? I am playing BD at present and it rocks but as I said a good friend loved morrowind and raved about it all the time, played as a wizard (I think) thats why I bought it. Actually at EB Redbank (thats a computer store here in Brisbane, and where I buy all of my software) have a package deal the complete set of Morrowind for $69.99, I was tempted to buy it as it has the complete addons. A bargin when one considers the depth of this game.

Again an help for someone starting the game would be appreciated

Thanks

Why should I tell you my preferences, since you're not me? Tell me what kind of playing style you have, and maybe several of us could help. Are you a powerplayer? A roleplayer? Do you prefer to sneak? Do you like powerful spells? Do you prefer running up to something and thumping it until it dies?

Fair enough, my question wasn't really that hard was it, I simply asked "any help would be apreacited" as I don't play alot of these games. Only have Morrowind and BD and am playing BD at moment.

Anyways wasn't really a big deal, will just have a look at it when I get more time (work alot of shift work) . Just thought you could advise a path for the new player.

Cheers

Morrowind and the whole Elder Scrolls series is my absolute favorite and reason I'm a huge fan of CRPGs. In fact, I enjoy the PC version of Morrowind much more than XBox.

But to give you a vague answer to your question (lol), Morrowind is not designed for the casual RP gamer. It's open-ended which means the player doesn't have to follow the main quest line. And if you do, the way you solve the major quest will not match the same experience of another player. Unless you both select one of the preformatted characters and join the same houses/factions.

If you like your RPGs spoonfed to you, Morrowind or the whole TES series is not for you. BD is an RPG that (when compared to Morrowind) is "spoonfed". You have no other choice than to follow the main plot and your character development is very limited. Morrowind has many different races, classes, professions, factions, etc. that a player can choose from. BD has 3 professions, two races (that really don't differ all that much except in their description), no factions and character development, while not limited, is quite stilted. It's the difference between making brownies by scratch or from a pre-packaged brand. (You can tell I don't cook that much. )

And in all fairness, fable is correct. Without knowing what type of player you are or what you expect out of RPGs, it's hard to give a character recommendation to play Morrowind. It has 2 expansion sets plus a construction set. The game is positively massive. And unless you actually play the game several times (at least begin it and try to get into the main storyline), and read the manuals that come with the game (and, with Morrowind, I suggest purchasing the walkthrough manual), you're going to find the gameplay daunting. If you can't afford to purchase a walk-through manual, there are several online that, while not 100% all inclusive, are quite good. (I found one that is approx. 281 printed pages and I still have it tucked away in the bottom of one of my RPG chests. That's how avid a gamer *I* am. LOL).

So, Morrowind is not a game you pop into your computer and 3 hours later you're pillaging villages. Probably 3 hours later in Morrowind, you've finished creating your character and have just made it off the boat. (LOL)

I will give you this much of a recommendation: if you're not sure what type of character to start out with, use one of the preconfigured characters. Simply answer the questions in the beginning when it's time to generate your character, and go from there. I like to start out with basic skills of a fighter with the ability to learn magic later on. That's the simplest advice I can offer someone just starting out with (or who is having troubles learning) Morrowind.

Good luck and enjoy the game!

I'd be happy to offer a little advice, Numpty, but I need to know what you want out of the game. So when you get a chance, tell me your expectations. I assume anybody can reply.

In fact, it may be better if you place this as a separate thread. That way, you'll get more attention for it.

Thanks people for your excellent replies, yes I guess I am a casual player but advice taken I will give it a second shot as I said earlier my mate raved about the game played it for months straight (phew) but anyways thanks again and I will keep you posted to how I go, thanks.

Even though I already have Morrowwind I have deicded pay day I am buying that complete pack as it looks awesome, they also had the complete set of Neverwinter Nights (that also looks polished).

I have got sick of the shoot-em ups and wanted to give, you know quest games a go, I used to play them a lot of my old Amiga 500 (ie Lands of Lore) and then later on PC (Betrayel at Krondor) two classic games eh?

Hope to keep in touch with you all, and again thanks

Cheers

p.s do you still have the link to that manual you said you downloaded ? (if you don't mind me asking)

Numpty,

I'm on my way out the door to an appointment, but as soon as I return, I'll see if I still have that link. I'm sure I can find it. In the meantime, I may start another thread in this forum for those interested in learning the 'ins-and-outs' of character creation, what an open-ended game is, and how to at least begin your journey in the world of Morrowind.

Check back later. This is going to be fun. *g*

P.S. I just bought Neverwinter Nights (Platinum edition) and having fun trying to learn how to get that game going.

G'Day again, well today I had a win, actually managed to buy the complete pack of Morrowind and both expansions for $52.00 EB at Redbank had it selling for $69.99 and had a 25% off sale, install and have been playing since lunch time, excellent fun 2nd time around. I am taking my time, reading and just enjoying this awesome game. One question I am stuck on a quest says to stay on top of lighthouse and spy on some guy, problem is can't even see him at night, so how is one able to trace his footsteps?

Will have to make sure I don't keep of BD too long either, on a funny note the wife spat chips eh, because this is the 2nd game this week, 1st BD now Morrowind

Cheers all

Hello Numpty!

Just stay on the lighthouse looking to the place. The told person is carrying a torch. Just look for the trail of the torch, then you find it.

Glad you were able to get started in the game. Here are a couple of websites that have walkthroughs for Morrowind. I don't know if the first one listed is the one I printed out but I skimmed through it and at least the quests are detailed:

Cheatcc.com

Bella online

Stratos Online This walkthrough is NOT all-inclusive but is designed to give the player help on the main quests. I don't know if the faction quests are listed here. You'll have to do some digging.

The further you get into the game, you'll begin to see the differences between which quests belong to the main storyline and the ones that are from the factions and guilds. And sometimes, they overlap.

You need not sit and wait for answers from people at this board. If you pop the words "Morrowind walkthrough" in the google search engine, you'll find a a lot of websites devoted to the game. You will also come across walkthroughs for Bloodmoon and Mournhold (can't remember the exact name of that expansion pack).

Also I know I mentioned beginning another Morrowind discussion thread but after giving it some thought, another thread may only confuse newcomers to the site. This thread already includes everything about the game, including the Construction Set.

If you're looking for Fargo from the Lighthouse, do so in the evening (at a certain time) and you'll notice an extra bright lantern. That's Fargo carrying it. He walks into a most curious place. Keep your eyes on that and you'll figure out the quest.

Good luck and have fun! You're already off to a great start.

Hello all, sorry to ask but you all mention the time, ie 20:00 - 23:59, my question is how can you tell the time (in game) I cannot see a clock in game screen and book says nothing about time, have checked, did I miss something?

Thanks again
