is it possible to play divinity original sin 2 without having played the first or do you lose too much plot and do not understand anything?

No, it's fine to start with Original Sin II. The Divinity games are all fairly self-contained, the series' lore (and indeed maps, which have caused me a headache!) being somewhat flexible and only a small amount which you'll pick up as you go being required to understand what's going on.

Also, there is quite a bit of time between the 2 games (more than 1200 years); there is lore in common and a few connections and references, but nothing that would cause a problem if you have not played the first game.
