Tsel know the german off topic threads, and i dont know who else, here from the english part, read from Time to time the german Threads.

Normally the Idea behind a Off Thread is something like a Party, or Pyjama Partys (is that correct?). In this topic we are more or less we self.

But the best Joke Threads are the Topic like :
"The ultimate Dragonrace 2004" here

In these Topics we are not only the Forummember, we are playing our Forums Avatar.

So im Stone, a big, strong Barbar.
With my 2-Handed Broadsword, and my Crossbow and not so many Brain

The Dragons are Dragons usw.

The next is the attitude, my is good.
And so handle i my Figur, a big Barbar with great Weapons, less Brain, but good and friendly (But not every Time )

Then we need a Place where we can play, in the Dragonrace we choice the dessert.
Becouse the Dessert is so big, and Dragons are so fat, err so big too that they need a long distanz for acceleration and a braking distance too.

In the Vampire Race we choise Transylvania, where we start to conquer a Castle, but after a time this thread is going to rest.

But sort of on topic too.

The thread I really like is the story thread you all have on the German side.

MASTER_GUROTH tried to start a similar thread on the English side, but the English side just doesn’t have the same way of thinking like the German side does.
The German side is more fun.
I mean nothing bad for the English side, but the German story side is fun.

Which Story Thread do you mean?

The "On the Road again" Thread? This is rather not a fun thread, or a fun Story.
It is really serious, and we take great care about this story, to make it really good, and readable.

Fun to me is a good story.
You all craft it well and it is a good thing.
It doesn’t sound all chaotic.
It makes sense.

Maybe it’s the one you already mentioned, but in it one of the ladies was telling the dragon to give her the diamonds and the gems.

I like reading that thread.

Tsel, the Thread you mean is the "Off Topic" Thead in the German Chat section.
The Thread i mentioned was in the German RPG Chat section.
"On the Road again"
It is a great adventure, in the Story and for us the Autors.

IO think I have a reason why both English forum and German forum are so different :

- In the German Forum we are maily role-players.

- In the English Forum we are mainly the real people.

(Personally, that's why I tend to like the English forum more. )

So in the German forum we are constantly playing our role - partly what you can see as the Avatar - and that leads into our topics like the DRagon Race or the Vampire Race.

The "Story" in the German RPG Chat is "On the Road again", a long, *really* long story, and very seriously made.

Also there we play our roles.

I think that's the reason why here are almost no topics like the Dragon Race, because people here are the *real* persons - and post like them.

This has also another impact : We had our infamous "lawsuit" against Alix, where in the process the borders between role-play and reality became blurred. No serious role-player should do that ! But in the end exactly that was used as a reason for ... well, what actually ? In the end it became a whole mess. I still shudder when I think of it.

Hre, we don't have this "border restriction", because everybody here posts like the real poerson. Which sounds more honestly to me.

Maybe in a more sophisticated form of this Forum we might need a border between RPG behaviour and "real" behaviour, so that they don't get mixed up.

Alrik.

Edit : P.S. : In the German forum I play the role of a "Streuner", what would be not really a thief, but rather a strider like Aragorn, some sort of. Used to make a living in towns, my character now shifts slowly into some sort of ranger.

Roleplaying has been attempted many times in the English forum, and but once it never worked out. Poeple left the forum, everyone wanted to join in. It became a mess.

Even play your avatar was done, I was a wood-elf ranger/druid with scarification :o

And even those poeple who according to me were best at it have either left or rarely show up anymore, maybe some new talent is lurking? but I fear it's something destined to fail again.

Also the English forums are according to me a mess, English <-> Anything for example, Anything was supposed to be anything that's not english german or dutch ... Everything get's posted just somewhere. The roleplaying stories oddly enough were in this "Anything" section, where it fits more in the RGP, wich I rarely read.

imo, if this has to have a bigger chance to succeed, their should idd be a clear distinction between what's chat and what's roleplaying. Roleplaying in RPG section or "ask Lynn" a seperate section with a non-chat rule (wich seems not like the English side way of doing).

Well, at least with the RPG CHat it works. There are almost no topics in it which are not RPG-related.

What I think is the biggest problem on the English side of the Larian house
is the race to get the next post in.
When you look at the German side ‘on the road again’ story it’s almost as if they wait patiently for the next person to post and there is no rush when one does post.
I remember watching good ole MASTER_GUROTH’s thread turn into utter chaos due to the rush to get the next post in.
I know it could be done and done well on the English side, but in order for that to happen the speed to post needs to slow down.

And attention to detail thought about before someone posts
so it doesn’t read like some “Dude Where’s My Car” movie script.

What say you all?
Any other thoughts?

and i'm a tuft of hair which got digitised thanks to censorship.

Draggy's points are sharp & right on the spot. posters in the english sections don't role-play & most that do aren't around anymore. i remember Mandrake who's always being a mangy cat that he is, & Kiya is always up to something according to her ava & i love her being 'nutty squirrel'. faile is always the elf pirate who's rowdy but kind-hearted. Anthea, well now we have Mea as an equivalent.

there are more, of course.

& Tsel is again quite a marksman, pointing out the machine-gunning posts english speaking posters tend to do, which i admit being one of them as well.

so please everybody, slow dooooowwwwwnnnnnn......

maybe when we open a story thread, we should be putting strict rules on what should be posted in it. it can be as strict as limiting posters (this will make a closed project) or no-question-asked.

anymore idea on increasing the quality of posts or threads?

I'll role-play in a role-playing area, but here, I just play myself, as bizare as that may be. I'd really like to have a role-playing thread start up again. I do wonder about it's survivability, though.

Tsel, our "On the Road again" Story (short OtRA), works only because we have striktly Roles to handle it.

We have a second Thread for the Story, our "Readme" (in this Thread it is only the Autors allowed to Post, but we are friendly to Guests )

In this Readme we put all the Discussion about OtRA, our wishes, we talk there if we come in Parts of the Story where we need a better cooperation.
Or if we see thats someone make a mistake, and forget things which been write earlier.
Most of the Time our Story is a source of inspiration and joy.
But sometimes it is real hard work.

Our Rules are
No one can post actions of an other Hero, exception, both Autor talk first via PM.
We have to notify the Posts before, if someone wrote that the Day is very friendly, and the Sun is Shining, nobody can write that it is a raini Day.
Nobody can act like a Superhero, we all have frontiers, like in the reallife.
And some more, which are usefull.

I think in time we are 8 (Alix, Alrik, Bigclaw6, Buad, GlanceALot, LuSer, Stone, Traveller, [and Red Cloud, he wants to come up with an Hero, then we are 9]) people who write this Story, and we all have the same rights, to steering the story.
That is not easy, we must take care.

But nobody can say we post slowly.
In the moment yes thats right, but we had times where we are Post 10 and more Post in the Story, and over 30-40 Post in our readme.
At one single Day

Yeah, in the readme we have sometime really great fun.

I like the idea of a role playing thread. I'm not sure how good I would be at it,
but I would love to give it a try.

I haven't read the German one. I can't read or speak German like Tsel does, but
from you guys have said it sounds like it could be alot of fun.

Oops, I guess I should have said if you get it going, I would love to give it a
try if it was OK with you guys. If you decide to keep it a private thing that it
OK with me too.

Like Stone said, we actually had to erect strict laws/rules before we seriously got into writing the story.

He already mentioned them.

The "anti-rush rule" is another, unwritten law. We wait until the next one posts, normally. But that still doesn't keep us away from writing pieces that might happen meanwhile [waiting].

Personally, I have this "detail problem" constantly. I don't know what's wrong with my perception, but I easily overlook details. I follow the main path very closely, but details usually slip through my perception very easily, I really don't know why.
Except details that are extraordinary. These keep saved in my mind almost forever.

Another thing is the strict division betwen "author-knowledge" and "character knowledge". This is essential !

You must "fade out" what you know as the Author when you write as a Character !

And another thing is, that you must write so that your character's actions are believable and reasonable.

The reader must be able to see why someone did things the way he /she did.

Quote

Also very important. Except you explicitely play an super-hero.

The "Readme" is also very important. We just *need* to post everything here to avoid inconsistencies and stuff. For example, if someone goes on vacation, he or she usually writes "I'm away for a few day. You can take my character with you" or something similar.

(By the way, has this turned into a "role-play preparation thread" ? )

If we have, shouldn’t we think within ourselves and create who our character is; our strengths, weaknesses, habits, and personal traits?

I am posing the question as a help me to understand question.
Not a suggestion.

What say anyone?

Erm you are not comparing me to faille are you??? I could never believe to live up to that .... I will however take that as a compliment

Seriously years ago I belonged to a Daggerfall (what a GREAT game that is) mailing list, and we just mailed the response to the list of the story, that worked very well and I truly enjoyed some of the RP that went on thru this system we even continued this whole thing by email where 1 person put it all together as the DM/GM.

So maybe (hey I said maybe) if someone has the time to play dm we can create some characters mail them to the dm for approval, then He (the dm) can start a story, to which we reply by email tohim and he then puts the responses together to enter in the Forum.

Hmm I know it sounds complicated, but it worked real well and after all I said "Maybe"

PS I havent got the time to play dm
