I feel like a novice gamer, a big baby. I'm playing "Very Easy," and I'm still seeking help on this message board. I am sorry.

Version 1.47, Act 1, Citadel Maze area. From the game map it looks like I’ve explored everywhere on this level and killed all the creeps. According to the BD Guide the room with the portal is room 12. The room has two sets of doors on its south end, each door having two levers. The room has a few barrels and a small water crystal that I picked up.

There is, however, no portal in the room, and I’ve never seen a portal there. I’ve been in and out of the room a number of times. I’ve tried various combinations with the door levers, but no combination makes the portal appear, including the combination given in the guide (L down, R up for the first door; L up, R down for the interior, second door).

I thought the portal may not have appeared because Tax was still present. So I returned to Tax and played his game. I got experience points, he departed, and I returned to the portal room, far to the SE.

No portal.

I suspect that somewhere along the line I have neglected to do something or I have done something “wrong” that has prevented the portal from appearing. So I have one or two questions, depending on whether I get an answer to my first question.

From my present vantage, with no portal in the room, is there anything I can do to make the portal appear? I do want an answer to this first question because I found a very good, charmed scimitar in the illusionist’s chest. I have saved games that will allow me to check the appearance of the portal before or after Tax departs, and I won’t lose my scimitar. If I must use a code, I will.

If there is absolutely no answer to my first question – though I hope there is – my second question is this: Presuming I have failed to do something or I have done something “wrong,” can anyone tell me what I have failed to do or what I have done “wrong?” Also, how far back in the game must I go to reload a save? (I have saves that go all the way back to the game’s beginning.) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" />

I’ve answered my own question, unsatisfactorily, but well enough that I can proceed. It’s unsatisfactory because I will be without that good scimitar.

I restored a save to a point where the portal room was still blacked out. I entered using the BD Guide lever code – which I had not done the first time I entered – and the portal appeared.

The portal’s appearance had nothing to do with Tax. He is present and the portal is present.

The portal’s appearance may have had something to do with the manner in which I switched the levers. Or its initial failure to appear may have been a lapse in video card function (two NVidia 6800 Ultra's in SLI). Or it may have been something else.

***SPOILER***

With the portal present, I have not yet killed the illusionist in the hallway north of the portal room. I’ll be careful to save before running my cursor over the illusionist’s chest. Maybe by a series of reloads I can regain the scimitar.

Oops! Sorry. The illusionist is not where I said he was, so that spoiler in my preceding post is something of a false spoiler. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/down.gif" alt="" />

That sounds more like just a weird glitch than anything you may or may not have done on your way to the room. AFAIK there isn't a trigger for the portal, it should just be there when you reach the room.

Anyway, good luck with the illusionist's chest; hopefully you can find something of comparable quality to the scimitar.

I did have good luck with the chest. I got another scimitar of comparable quality. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
