One of the (very few) things I didn't enjoy about DD was killing the wolves.....
In any new incarnation of the game, I'd appreciate a way of stunning, holding (energy cage doesn't work, I tried...) or even befriending hostile animals...maybe you could even get info from them, if you chose the right skills — it would fit right in with a ranger/druid type character.
On the same note, I do love that the kitty in Aleroth hangs out with you, and I make a point of petting it whenever I'm in the village...(I felt kind of sad gathering my stuff up from my homebase and preparing for Divine-ness...knowing I was leaving kitty all alone in the village....oh well, he had plenty of bunnies to eat....)

I agree, I hate having to kill wolves. I felt the same in Baldur's Gate when having to kill wolves and large felines.
Oh, I love what you say about Kitty! I do the same thing
The last time I played Divine Divinity, when I was gathering the council members, the orcs in Aleroth actually attacked that poor little cat! I killed all the orcs in town (checked and double-checked), yet the next time I entered the village Kitty had been slain! I immediately learned the Restoration spell and brought him (or her) back to life.
Strange how you can get attached to a digital cat. It's just that I always imagine it's one of my real cats

oooooooooohhhhh..that's just MEAN!!! Those orcs are *%$%ing lucky they didn't do that to MY kitty....I'da ripped their digital hearts out!! ... and then resurected them, so I could start on their spleens!!!! (do NOT mess with a she-mage's kitty!!)
Actually, the Aleroth kitty looks JUST like my own furball, which is probably why I'm so attached to it....even if my kitty is sitting right on my lap the whole time....

(I admit I've redone about 2 hours worth of gameplay after a mistaken click of the mouse made me accidently kill a cat in the Wine shop....hmmmm......wait a minute...the MOUSE.....it was a set-up!!. The MOUSE made me do it!!!.....)

Do though Both Baldur's Gate I and II are great games! I guess you can always charm the animals

At the time these games were released their graphics were quite good as I recall. Especially Shadows of Amn.

In my opinion, Shadows of Amn still looks great. Not as smooth as Divine Divinity, but still great. And anyway, it's especially the gameplay that counts, no?

Ok, third edition rules are a lot better, but can you honestly say you think Baldur's Gate I and II aren't good RPG's?

Never said that (allthough BG1 got really boring as soon as you got to Naskel mines). Just said they were old, looks old, plays old, and that I therefore didn't like them.

Ub
You have to read a topic since the beginning and not only the last post.
We are talking about killing the wolves, about Kitty in Aleroth and about pets in the next Larian games.

Back to pets than Well in any case, I would love it if cats and dogs would run around again in villages. It's one of those things that makes a game come to life.

As long as they don't all start attack just because you were attacked by a wolf in the middle of a forest...

That's what I'm saying...I want another way to relate to the animals....especially the wolves I hated hearing that 'yip' evertime I had to kill one...(however, none of the dogs have gone hostile on me....)
A necromancer...or some type of evil mage could control the spiders and beetles and have them to their bidding....a 'cat' burglar' could have the town's kitties telling him when the coast is clear....dogs would be drawn to a noble paladin (but perhaps hostile to the cat burglar)....or a druid or ranger type could actually talk with the animals at high enough levels.....
Either way....a 'charm' or 'energy cage' or a non-lethal strike should be available for dealing with animals who are hostile...not nice to kill them all....
Besides...a non-lethal attack would be welcome in situations where a whole heap of mind-controlled soldiers try to kill you too....i never did feel right about wiping them all out.....

Übereil was actually making a joke In , when you accidentaly kill one animal of a certain species (that was non hostile), all fellow members of that species become hostile throughout the entire game Way to hold a grudge!

I think that happens in DD, too...at least I've read here from people who were attacked by dogs throughout the game....and the one time I TOTALLY ACCIDENTALLY killed a kitty....the other kitty in the room started to attack me...but I reloaded cuz I don't think I could have finished the game killing all the kitties...

Well instead of killing aimals which people dont seem to like why not have "beasts".

Beast are in my opinion are half animals/plants and half monstrosities...

You know how it is...a mage/alchemist perform an experiment on an animal..it doesnt work..the animal breaks free and survives on its own..it breeds with those of its part animal nature and the result is a half-breed feral being.

E.g some idiot mage experiemnted with a wolf's teeth and a large posion ivy.
He wanted the resulting being to protect his herbs. What happened was he created a moving venus fly trap. Consequently the mage was digested by the trap who then moved on and had loads of offspring.

When fighting such a creature..the crature will bite and can swallow you for a period of time. When you emerge you will sustain alot of posion damage.

Or the mage might be curious to cross a turtle with a spider...ohhhh

So that the crature has 8 legs...an extemrly tough shell and a head of a turtle which can spit a sticky substance which may cause you to be entangled.

I.e instead of fighting the creature you have to break free from the web first...by this time the creature would have already started to use its massive teeth into your helpless body.

It's great to have special beasts, but animals should also still be there. I just think animals shouldn't attack you by default. A wolf won't attack anything it sees, only if you attack it first, or if it's hungry of course

I am not suggesting that the spider would drop money.

*shrug*

Its different!!!

Im not sure how you would determine that the wolf was hungry...maybe by the time i.e go near it at 6pm and you would be food. Or make a noise in its Den and it would attack you(at night).

Larian wouldn't have to develop a full game, so createing it would be cheaper. Thus the gain.

I didn`t like this too. I also didn`t understood sudden hostility of dogs and cats. Killing them wasn`t my favourite activity.

I was kind of confused about the sudden hostility of dogs. I never killed one (until they began attacking me) and the only thing I did remotely to anger one was kill a pig and chicken at a farm, possibly within sight of the dog there. Now all dogs in the game hate me. Hopefully this will never happen to cats as well!

I don't reload for cats. If they want to attack a rat I'm already swinging for, they better be fast. If they aren't, it serves them right for trying to steal my experience points.

Actually, I was attacked by the dog Lar after re-entering that hotel room. Since he was hostile to start with, I killed him, and didn't notice other dogs had turned hostile for awhile (otherwise, if I had a recent save I would have reloaded).

Really? What "Lar" dog in DD?

Btw, I felt so terrible when I accidentally killed the cat in Aleroth that I reloaded.

Anyways, I hope we get pets in DD2 next round. Like you know... Neopets. LOL. Now that was fun for a few weeks before I got so bored.

It'd be so much fun to upgrade your pet and change the claws and attack type like... eh, Pokemon. (No... don't quote me on this.)

If you enter the Dwarven Bread inn before going to the dwarven village, there is a dwarf in a room north of the other marked one. He offers you some gems, and if you refuse them he leaves, and you can take a dwarven teleporter scroll off the table. If you return later, or if you go to the village before the inn, there will be a hostile dog named Lar in the room.

Some of the Larians had a bet with the real Lar that they could sneak a 'Lar' character into the game without him noticing.

I thought you could not attack/kill the cat in Aleroth? A couple people left the Aleroth gate open, and either had the cat wander out or a stray orc wander in, leading to a dead or missing cat.
If you kill other cats, the one in Aleroth (that you can 'talk' to) will not turn hostile.

The last time I played Divine Divinity, when I was gathering the council members, the orcs in Aleroth actually attacked that poor little cat! I killed all the orcs in town (checked and double-checked), yet the next time I entered the village Kitty had been slain!

The orcs killed the kitty in my game as well. Made me sad and angry. I didn't think until after I left the area that I could have resurrected the kitty. After that I finished off Rivertown as quick as possible to leave for the wastelands cause without the kitty no reason to hang around after that. I even tought about reloaded an earlier save but it had been awhile between saves.

I also agree the wolves should not attack you. Wolves do not attack people in real life, so this sets a bad example for young players that do not know how real wolves interact. In the state I live there just staring to get back a small population of wolves after they almost became extinct. We really don't need wolves to be portrayed as mankillers.

There is a charactor in the Dwarf Inn named Lar that appears as a dog and attack my charactor even though the other dogs do not. In this case I am able to leave and it won't follow me but I do not understand why he is hostile. Must have rabies I guess.

If you are very, VERY fast, you can save the kitty in the town ! I managed it ... and it was quit hard. But it is manageable !

Thanks for the tip Alrik, I'll give it a shot!

Now that I know the Orcs target the cat, I'll be prepared next time.

In a new game I started now the dogs are all hostile to me. I had not killed a dog and went to the blue boar in after the healers moved there. I wanted to talk to the healers but a dog was attacking me. I did not want to kill it so left but it followed me and then a second dog joined it. As I was only level 4 and did not have any stamina potions I had no choice but to kill the dogs because that early in the game two dogs would have killed me if I didn't fight back. I just think its sad that you can't interact with the Main NPC's in the game in what should be a safe setting without being attacked by dogs. It makes me think that whoever wrote the program does not like dogs or cats. Just because of this I would have to mark the game down because I really do not what to play trhough the game killing dogs.

In all my games the dogs would automatically be hostile if I'd go anywhere near them! So I just figured "It doesn't matter, it's just a computer game" and in fact, it's good to kill the dogs, as they give you meat. But yes, I hope they can fix that somehow and make the dogs as docile as the cats.

I have had over half my games where the dogs did not attack me and a couple games where they did. I think its just random, like maybe each game has a % chance of the dogs being friendly. Not sure. If I play the beginning enough times I might see a pattern. It could be triggered by some small event.

For example. The last game I played the dogs were friendly but There was just one dog, the one named Lar that attack me (The one in the Blue boar Inn). I remeber Raze saying that if you go to the Dwarven village before you go to the Blue Boar inn that the dog Lar is in the back room instead of the dwarf who want to give you a gem.

In this game where the dogs are hostile I wetn to the blue Boar Inn 1st and talked to the dwarve in the back room and just as I got outside a dog chased me and then another joined it. Its possible that this is the scenario that determines whether dogs are friendly or hostile.

I suppose I could confirm it be saving before I go to either the village or the Blue Boar Inn and seeing what the dogs do after I try both orders a few times. I'll save this experiment for when I get real bored some time.

edit- also when Lar is in the game, I do not attack him but leave and he doesn't follow me. Then the doags are still friendly except for him. If I killed Lar its likely the other doags might then be hostile as well.

I don't use any meat from the dogs, it seems a bit wierd. Like when the kitty in Aleroth got killed and didn't pick up the meat. That would be cruel. There should be an option to bury the cats and dogs 9or creamate) and have a funeral in a pet cemetary.

Yeah, or cremate them and then have the ashes compressed into a diamond ring, I imagine that would add a whole new meaning to "ring of the dog" or "cat's ring".

Yeah, my first time through I accidently killed a cat at some point, (never noticed it) then didn't like having to kill them the rest of the way through. In Verdistis (which seems to be infested with cats) I eventually put poison skin on for the little buggers. What's almost more disturbing is that when they die, they leave meat behind...that you can eat...Hmmm

Well, in Indonesia some of the old tribal cultures did (and still do) eat dog meat! Of course I've never tasted it, and I don't think I intend to...

P.S Alrik was right! YOU CAN SAVE KITTY! I just ran and mashed all the orcs with my singing blade (very good blade, I once had one that was doing 140 something-187 damage plus life, mana drain levels 4 & 5 and frost level 3) and then after the massacre was over, shouted "HOORAY!" So yes all that to say, thanks a lot Alrik, the Forum would be a very different place without you!
