Ok heres the deal...

I built a new computer and need to xfer the data (word docs/pics/etc) over to my new computer.

I understand that I can use a crossover cable to do this. My knowledge of networks is well...terrible so I am having a hell of a time getting this to work.

Any advice would be great.

Thanks,

Me!

hey Nero, i think computer shops near your place should have those on sale. however if u feel like doing the crimping yourself, here are a few links that might help;

DIY How-To
Dux Computer Digest (it has more details, if u're interested)
more of the same
yet another one

i know that all of them are overlapping in information but i am not sure which may be more helpful to u so i provide all just in case. hope that helps, Nero.

If you are still going to use the old computer, it might be easier to set up a LAN, especially if you want to share an internet connection, or may want to add another computer (ie a laptop or friend's computer for a LAN party). If you are getting rid of the old computer, it might be easier to just pull the hard drive out and stick it in the new computer temporarily.

Anyway, for what you asked;

How I connect two computers to exchange files? - other direct connection options, as well as ethernet

Direct Connection intro / How to set up a direct cable connection (DCC) in Windows XP (written for parallel cables, but the procedure for ethernet should be similar)

Quick description of what a cross over will look like:

If you view the cable plug so that the 8 little pin connecters is on top and facing away from you... in otherwords the cable is comming from you, and ending away from you, and you looking at the pin side.

point 1 (according to model A calbes)

stipe green (1)
green (2)
Stripe orange (3)
blue(4)
stripe blue (5)
orange (6)
stipe brown (7)
brown (8)

If you will only use 100mbit the only cables that HAS to be correct is 1,2,3,6. (the rest are only used when you go 1000 mbit.

Point 2 (according to a model A calble)

The only thing that change around is 3 and 6

stipe green (1)
green (2)
orange (6)-now (3)
blue(4)
stripe blue (5)
Stripe orange (3) - now (6)
stipe brown (7)
brown (8)

When you crimp those plugs, make sure that you have some of the cable's outer cover over the bar that it crimps it with, otherwise the calbe tends to pull out of the plug in a short while.

Your existence alone, is excuse enough for the creation of the entire universe… Il you my darling Jeanne-Dré 
