I have not tried either, but you could check out the last freeware version of Bulent's Screen Recorder or (for non-game applications) Wink.

Audacity, perhaps ? It's OpenSource, as far as I know. But I don't exactly know whether it's really for recording things ...

Audacity can record sound, but not video.

He didn't write exactly what he wanted to record.

I believe fraps is one of the most commonly used programs for recording games. I've tried bulents but after a time the free trial expires and then you'll get bulents logos in your screen!

Is the logo big or in an inconvenient place?

Anything wrong with fraps you don't like that you have to find better?

I find fraps great for recording game footage.

Reason why i asked first is because i heard that fraps isn't that good of a recording program, don't remember where or when i heard it so, but by seeing your video it seems that fraps ain't that bad at all.

So Plowking do you compress the videos you make with fraps, or do you just set the resolution and FPS low enough? 'Cause when I make a video of about 4 mins, I get a file that's about 3GB.

Compression should have a much greater effect on file size than just reducing the resolution or frame rate, though you'll probably want to do both.

Fraps most likely writes uncompressed video by default, in order to minimize the impact it has on game performance. It may have an option to compress the video, though (either during capture or after). Alternately, you can use VirtualDub to edit/trim video as well as compress it, or ZS4 (have not tried the latter).

I know that, Raze as you have told me in another thread a while back(thanks for that BTW), but I was wondering which kind of compression he uses.

I knew that sounded familiar....

For YouTube, What's the best format to upload for high quality? | Video.

I used virtual dub to compress the video. DivX mpeg set to the same parameters that you see in the link Raze provided.

Though it doesn't have to be that size for youtube, because when you upload it youtube will convert the size. But has to be under 100 megs and under 10 mins (If I remember right when you upload).

FRAPs produces only uncompressed avi's because as Raze mentioned it would only impact the game if it had to compress it on the fly.

I just convert the avi's then delete the original.

After making my first short GW Video , you can see that at some points in the video the 'DivX' logo is visible, so I wonder how do you get rid of it?(the parts without the logo are compressed by Windows Movie Maker)

And yes, I know my video sucks, but it was my first attempt.

Not bad - music suits the dancing really well.

I used sony vegas to convert to wma, but only because it wouldn't let me use any mpeg codecs, if I use virtual dub with a divx codec I get the watermark appearing.
