On the first level of the catacombs in Aleroth, there are three magic orbs which you must collect and drop on three pentagrams, near the stairs to level 2. Once you do this, a portal will open up. Going through the portal will bring you to the nearby room and unlock its door, as well as unlock the stairs up to the graveyard.

If you leave without going through the portal and do a bunch of other stuff, it will eventually disappear. I loaded an old game, and saved before and after dropping the orbs, then ran to the dwarven village and teleported back, to break the portal. I tried tossing a pyramid through the grates, but was unsuccessful. I was able to swap files around to remove the old magic orbs, and get the levitation animation for the replacements, but could not get the portal to re-appear. Luckily, the portal is not the only way to get in (well, it is, but you can cheat a bit).

Please read this post through before attempting, and make sure you follow the steps below carefully.

What you will need to get to the second level is a data.000 file from a saved game just after going through the portal. You can download my data file (352KB) from that point in the game.
Warning: The data.000 file basically defines your character (stats, skills, experience points, class, gender, etc.) and keeps track of all NPC locations and status. Keeping a data file from another game will break quests and either restore monsters you have already killed or eliminate ones in areas you have not been, with possible game-ending consequences, particularly if a key NPC effected in addition to your own character. You must backup and restore your original data.000 file as part of the procedure below, or you will create more problems that you fix.

Procedure:

1) Make sure you have at least one teleporter pyramid in your inventory, and save your game under a new name, such as 'fix'.

2) Make a backup of the data.000 file in the newly saved game folder, by re-naming it or moving it to a subfolder. Important: this file must be restored at the end of the procedure.

2b) Confirm that you have completed step 2.

3) Copy the data.000 file from a save just after using the portal (perhaps the one from my game).

4) Re-load the 'fix' save game. This will put you beside the stairs in the room east of the three magic orbs.

5) Drop a teleporter stone and save the game under a new name, such as 'fix2.

6) Delete the data.000 file from the 'fix2' game folder, and restore the backup copy of that file from the 'fix' folder.

6b) Confirm that you have completed step 6.

7) Re-load the 'fix2' game.

You will now be wherever you were when you saved the 'fix' game, outside of the room with the stairs to the catacombs level two. A teleporter pyramid, however, will be inside the room. biggrin

Make sure you leave the other pyramid on the floor; drop it at your home base if you have it in your inventory. Since you have to restore your data.000 file, the game doesn't think you went through the portal. The door to the room will remain locked, and if you exit up to the graveyard, the grave will be closed and locked behind you.

Pick up the pyramid, take the stairs down, and complete the catacombs. You will have to use the pyramids to leave and enter, but you would most likely have done it that way in any case.

This technique will also work in other situations.

Dr Elrath's house
For those who left without getting the cure potions, or can not get in due to a bug.

If you have the letter from the doctor's basement in your inventory, there is an automatic cut-scene where he kicks you out of the house when you get to the front room. Until this point, you should be able to open the door with Lockpick level 2.

The easiest way to get back into the house is probably to just toss a teleporter stone through a window (screenshot). A data.000 file from a save in the basement (443KB) can also be used, or one in the front room (399KB), if that is where you want to be.

An alternative solution is to get the inventory files, containing only the letter and two cure potions (45KB). Not sure if this will work if you have already used it once, but you can download Elrath's house key (36KB).
Instructions are here; Lost Items -guide and directory of inventory files

Thieves' Guild
The two thieves' guild tests can get screwed up if, for example, you wait too long to do the second test. Whatever the reason, you can use this trick to get into the guild without having to join (though you miss experience and the skill Rob would have taught you).

I saved a game after joining the guild, just past the members-only entrance. Then I re-loaded an earlier game, got the quest to free Penumbra and entered the Ducal inn basement without even talking to Rob. Using the data file from the other save to drop a teleporter stone on the opposite side of the door, I was able to get in, do the lockpicking bet, free Penumbra and find the holy dagger.
Here is the data.000 file (442KB)

Nericon's Garden portal
After you kill the frogs in the garden, a portal opens to a treasure room. The door to the next room is locked, and if you do not move the boxes to find the lever which opens it, the portal will eventually disappear.
Here is the data.000 file (436KB)

For a possibly faster and easier alternate solution, see

Goemoe Cellar (509KB) - under the hatch in the house where Goemoe gets imprisoned. After you replace your data file and teleport in, there should be a cut scene (once you take a step or two).

Scrying Room (504KB) - in the council hall.

Assassin's guild (456KB) - at the entrance. Yarun is in a room on this level, so you may want to deal with him before using any stairs, or exiting the guild into the Verdistis sewers.
