Hi!

So I'm reaching what I think is about the halfway point of the game and I was wondering what other people would recommend for skills to train up past level 5.

My character is a sword and shield specialist (well, hammer and shield right now, I have a buffed-up Rakazel's Hammer) with a bow as a harrying weapon. Build is focused mainly on passives and healing buffs. I mindread pretty much everyone.

Here lies the Unknown Soldier.

I'd continue dual wielding, and max that skill, as well as Whirlwind, Rush Attack (depending on how often you use it; one point at least is very useful) and Bleed (depending on skill point availability).

I probably wouldn't bother with bow skills if you are only using it to draw opponents to you and get some damage in (playing a ranger, I maxed Ranger Strength, Splitting Arrows [at the end, 6 levels from equipment], Explosive Arrows [3 from equipment], Way of the Ranger [5 from equipment; in fact I didn't even try the skill before level 40, when getting that bonus on a bow] and Ranger Stealth [only has 5 levels]).

Any character can benefit from maxing Lockpick (can't be boosted [to 7] until later in the game) and boosting Mana Efficiency (based on mana usage and regeneration; as I ranger (that didn't invest in spirit or intelligence) I put 6 points in and had another 4 from final equipment).

Death Blow, Evade, Healing and Regenerate all give a good bonus with the first point, but diminishing returns after that.
Mindread can also be left at 1, or boosted if you have the points to spare (I left it at 1 for most of the D2:ED section of the game, and maxed it before heading to the FoV section; there are some areas with respawning opponents in FoV, though, so saving XP from mindreading isn't critical, if there are other skills that would benefit from boosting).
