aka How to destroy items eek sad

This is a brief summary of a couple bugs which (assuming you run into them) can be easy to recover from if you save before looting or moving a lot of stuff around.

There is a bug with putting items in a container in your inventory, or picking stuff up after using a potion or spell to boost your strength. NOTE: This was fixed in the download versions of the game.

The weight you are carrying is not updated properly (in the disk version) when you place an item in a container in your inventory. This allows you to carry much, much more than you should be able to. After moving/dropping/picking up/equipping anything that changes your main inventory, however, the weight will be re-calculated. You may then be carrying more than your maximum weight capacity, in which case nothing will go into your inventory. The same situation can happen after Bless, Heaven's Blessing or a strength potion wear off.

If you are over-loaded and equipping something causes this update, what it replaces will be destroyed. The first time I ran into this was in the farmlands, where I accidentally equipped a rake while I was looting, and lost my sword. Fortunately, I had saved a couple minutes previously. If you drag and drop something where there is a red X when overloaded, it will be destroyed. I had a very full chest disappear dropping it where there was no red X once. This bug with containers is handy for moving a lot of stuff at a time, but is rather dangerous.

A few people have encountered disappearing chests. Those which have zero weight when open seem to be more susceptible to problems.

When encumbered, Kiya dropped a couple chests (one inside the other), clicked on it and it disappeared. See the before and after screen shots of this, and a possible warning sign of trouble with a chest.

Some have found that disappeared chests were visible at night, or when they stood at a certain location. One person had a chest disappear when they put it down outside a building, but it was visible when they went inside, and they could get their stuff back using Telekinesis.

Corshal encountered problems with just a couple different styles of chests, and found a clipping error when tossing multiple chests several screens away (using the shift key to move the screen focus) where the chests were replaced by sections of walls.

See connected containers? for more fun and games with chests (and barrels).

yes thanks raze!!
and welcome to the pooh-bah club.... !!

i've noticed that the hollow book
does show how much weight is in the book,
i thought i read somewhere that it
would not register any extra weight

The book from the thieves' guild is suppose to show the weight (except for the bug with putting items in a container in your inventory). Due to its form and low weight, it has been compared to the Book of Holding from some other game, except that it does not negate the weight of anything put inside it.

Speaking of dropping things on the ground, do not drop chests outdoors or they will disappear on you. The only way I've found to retrieve the items is to enter a building, then do the shift-scroll across the map to where the chest is. While in a building you will be able to see the chest outdoors. Click on the chest and your guy will run there and open it even though he can't see it.

Just adding this to this thread for a consolidated listing.

Never had a disappearing chest outdoors yet. I've had one sitting near the Aleroth teleporter and it it's never vanished on me for as long as I've been playing. I'm guesstimating I'm about 3/4 through the game.

You don't have to be in a building at all. This "glitch" happened a lot for me mostly with opened chests (open them in your inventory, then put them on the ground), I can see the chest as black when my character is some steps away from the place, but still outside, no need to enter any buildings whatsoever. I managed to also retrieve the chests, but it's far harder, than it should be, not sure, how I made it, just kept clicking on the chest (when it's black) and running to/from it, back and forth at a certain point the game allows you to pick the chest up.

I was reproducing it today with my female warrior character (got one of those ZERO chests bugged again, silly me never learns to not put them on the ground while opened, closed chests don't seem to glitch XD), might have found a guaranteed way to retrieve them. It seems to be tied to the camera rather than to your character. So positioning yourself as far as possible to force the chest turning visible (although black), then holding shift, or pressing caps lock and moving the "camera" close to the chest, but not too close, so it will stay visible, then clicking on (or near) it to send your character there, he/she will get close and the chest won't disappear (tested), once they are close to each other, open your inventory and drag the chest in, you can let go of shift, or press CL again to resume the default camera view.
