I tested opening my largest items.000, which is 1.266 MB that was played without any editors to level 49 and I found that declared items were 3269, while found items were 3253. This made the corrupted items become a total of 16 items.
Item Zero is always a training sword but immediately after that is item 51, 52, 53 then a corrupted item (Leather Helmet) that has no item number entry at all for reference then item 54, so there must be an inherent BUG in the random item generator.
It is very rare or impossible to have a corrupted critical item that you wear or is a unique item, so there is no serious problem when we have 16 corrupted items in the list that we never ever find or use.
There is no need to fix them either because DD and DDIE both consider that they never exited.
If you can open the items.000 file, backup, edit and save then play the game with that saved file then everything is perfect and as designed.
