So this happens during the encounter with Nere.

Most gamers, like me, who work hard in real life as LG/NG/CG would choose to save the gnomes in the gryforge. Because why not, right?

Now this is a funny thing, on entering the combat with Nere and his minions, you CANNOT RELEASE ANY AOE DAMAGE, or the gnomes would SUDDENLY become hostiles and attack you...

Bro I am trying to save you???

I think it's because the gnomes are not as nice as they seem to be.

Think about it, why are they really there?

Runepowder. What are they going to do with runepowder? Blow people up in Baldur's Gate. What can that stuff really do? According to Philomeen, a small amount of it can blow up an entire city. What does she have? An entire powder keg of it. She tells you right out that they all came there for that stuff, and Wulbren knows the formula. That's why he was taken to Moonrise, so the Absolute could extract it from him.

So, I'm thinking that they're not exactly so nice. I could see them turning on you at the drop of a hat.

Nere enconter is quite funny ...
If you want to maximalize your outcome and are willing to step out of your role for a second ... you can easily kill every single Duergar (if you sided with them) and nobody will move a muscle. laugh

But once you use any AoE, or surface effect attack ... and some gnome WILLINGLY step into it ... they all turn hostile, since you just hurt them. laugh

The gnomes run around like headless chickens making it very tough not to accidentally target one. It took a few reloads to make that not happen, and I ended up not being able to use certain magic.

The gnomes are slaves, and lack agency. As an Eilistraeen priest it would've been nice to convert Nere, but all I could do was talk him down from murdering the slaves.

It's a weird encounter overall.

I do agree. It is frustrating. First time I played it, had to do it like a dozen times just because one gnome kept running into fire.

Exactly, and it was at the end of the encounter. I took a half hour just to pick the bad dueger off only to have one get mistakenly hit at the last minute.

Overall grymforge is a barren boring encounter for me.
