I really enjoy when there is the choice to have a companion do something that's more appropriate for their character than the PC, such as allowing Astarion or Gale to put the gem in the Necromancy of Thay book. I recorded that result (below) and it seems fairly similar to the PC's version of the scene if they choose to continue looking at the book themselves. Problem is, there is rather different and unique animation/dialogue for the Companion already! If the PC unlock the book themself but gives it to Gale or Astarion, the cutscene progresses differently though with the same general outcome (for Astarion anyway, from what I can tell).
Combining the two versions of the scene would be ideal and I hope that's what is ultimately done. Does anyone else have related experience with scenes like this? I'm fairly sure that the Lady of Pain worshiper in the goblin camp responds differently to Astarion than to the PC, but I'm not sure.

*Just started playing BG3 a few weeks back - Patch 7 - so give me a bit of grace if I'm repeating or missing anything from earlier versions.*
I generally try to avoid playing as companions (it just doesn't make sense as it is not exactly team-created RPG like Solasta or Wasteland2&3/IcewindDales), so I didn't run into it.
I think what you are running into now is Astarion as a companion and Astarion as a playable character - of course Origins haven't been fully implemented yet, so it is difficult to say how much of Astarions unique content will there be. nor if it will be accessible if he is played as companion. I honestly have no clue what best solution would there be. One character being playable main protagonist, a companion and playable companion is difficult for me to wrap my head around, as all of those three things call for different things in my mind.
Sure, it's definitely not the simplest solution, but I love it. If they can pull it off somehow, even if it just stays in this form, I'll still call it a 👍! Lack of companion agency is one of the things most RPGs don't have, they're always so PC-centric that it hurts sometimes. I truly enjoy the level of interaction the companions have with the PC and world so far.
