I was fighting in the goblin camp against Dror Ragzlin and I got knocked into the spider put. This shouldn't have been a big deal as a Tiger barbarian with the Jump spell currently active on me. Turns out it was a big deal because even though I can more than cover the night and there was definitely enough space to make the jump, I can't actually select the space above me. The camera cuts out the area so that I can see my character, which is a good feature overall, but when trying to cover ground it makes it impossible to make the moves the player intends on making. The ability to see through terrain like that should be togglable. Page up/down keys come to mind to toggle this and even toggle individual layers.

Yes, I found verticaliy in BG3 to be troublesome. That is also if you try to target enemies on different layer of elevation then yourself.

I am not sure if BG3 recognises "layers". I was thinking recently above it when discussing how flying could be better implemented then just teleporting across flat planes. Something like XCOM allows to move up and down through levels layers using mousewheel, but that game is build to work that way.

I am at a loss of what a good practical solution could be, but I would appreciate one. I worry it is a result of bad decisions made early into development though, and will be here to stay.

You don't necessarily need to recognize layers though. Just toggle on/off the floor disappearing and scroll to zoom in and out, the camera can clip through the floor/ceiling if it needs to by scrolling in enough. Especially when I toggle the tactical camera on, which is a top down view, the entire second floor doesn't need to vanish, but it does and there's no camera movements I can do to make it appear. Just toggle that setting on/off with a single button and this problem is fixed, and if Larian doesn't do it I guarantee there will be a mod that does.

I am equally unsure. The game world is technically 3-dimensional, but much of the programming and systems are strongly 2-dimensional.

And I am equally worried that we will see little significant progress on verticality, and that this will go down as one of Larian's questionable descriptions of their game, and coming up short of what was advertised.

After three games sharing the same system I don’t really expect this issue (and other concerning “verticality”) to be ever addressed at this point (especially since it sounds like Larian has its hands full already just trying to implement all the planned content by a reasonable deadline, let alone manpower to spare to adjust systems), but yeah, the current implementation is far from flawless.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN
