As with almost all enemies, the shaman hammer spell works wonders because it both does damage and paralyzes for approximately two combat rounds.
He is dead meat just standing there unable to cast spells. Unless you have run out of mana potions you can cast over and over as needed even with low intelligence - in fact my warrior with intelligence of 1 made good use of that spell.
