Basically, I don't want to develop a playstyle that becomes obsolete once certain rules change.

Personally, I don't love that we can throw potions. I think it would better if only Rogues could use hide as a bonus action. I don't care whether wizards can scribe all the spells or just some of them.

But my preferences aside, I'm okay with whatever the rules happen to be. I just want to know what they're going to be. I don't want to get in bad habits.

Right now, I can have my Sorcerer cast a leveled spell as an action and then quicken another leveled spell as a bonus action. I'm okay with that if it's going to be the rule in BG3. But if it's not going to be the rule, I'd rather avoid doing that so I don't lean on it as a tactic and then realize the option is gone.

While a part of me would like that as well, I'm going to play devil advocate for a second :

It might be best for them to not make any promises in term of what will be a definitive rule.

Indeed, since they need to adapt some of the rules (PnP to video game would require that), they probably still need time to find the proper balance.
Yes, still, even after all this time of EA.
After all, they have to take into account all the new contents not available in EA as well.

In EA, changes are to be expected.

I think we’re close enough to final release to be reasonably assured we won’t see significant rule changes from EA. Also in regards to the sorcerer example cited it would be rather un-Larian like to make a change that limits player options.

Having said that, I’m all for Larian making an appearance on their own forum to clarify this and many other topics of discussion.

un-larian like... you mean something like artificially blocking access to characters inventory and spells in a patch without even telling people?

i agree Larian may want to test changes... it just sucks when they can't be rats to tell us

Precisely. If Larian was 100% on final ruleset, then there would be no point of early access.

I think that is a safe assumption to make, HOWEVER, it's been reported before with games playing with some major changes right before game's release (XCOM1 comes to mind, where devs where switching back and forth on a key feature right until shipping).

While I understand OPs dilemma, I don't think it is reasonable for Larian to commit to anything until they are ready (and even after release, I tend to appreciate rebalancing and updates, even if it messes up a bit with my ongoing playthrough). As 1.0 will no doubt require a restart, I don't think it really matters if the game's ruleset will be a bit different then what we have now.

it's EA i guess you should never got it in the first place if you have problems with beta gameplay and testing... Sound like you should just wait for full game next year.

The only info we get is from panels from hell anyway and that is not much anyway..

Game is in development. Changes are expected.

To beat a dead horse (if you have seen many of my other posts), everything you mentioned is something that you can choose not to do. So by "fixing" them, you "break" them for others that enjoy them as they are.

*I* hope some things like wizards being able to learn any spell and being able to throw a potion are put in a rules/difficulty settings section so the players can choose how they want to play rather than limit them to one way of playing.

We are still expecting major changes like reactions... and once the feature set goes hard, there will likely be playability/difficulty/rules changes as part of the final polish so I would not expect anything final on "the rules" anytime soon.

lol, I've played this game daily since it came out in early access. I'm probably in the top one percent of people who have the most time logged in this game.

To me anyways, the <rules> in this game feels like a pre-EA development phase. Try this try that and see what turnips sticks to the wall...The game say do this, <<thats how you play>>, but then takes a 90 turn and brings out weird rules.
I am confused on what Larian is trying to bring out in this game. Checking their social media stuff, I am even more confused. Weird jokes, fan fiction like kids are running the show...nothing substantial regarding the game systems or lore.

Example on how I feel Larian is handling its game communication:

-Is this a D&D5 game; yes or no? Larian : Maybe but yes its like homebrew D&D.
-How many classes and what abilities (ability trees) will be available? Larian : We don't know yet all the classes, but similar to D&D...
etc...
There is NOTHING concrete about anything?!

My theory goes that they must be super busy creating this amazing story with cinematic, romances, dialogues; and still have little clue and how exactly the gameplay and rules will evolve.

Of course everything should not be set in stone, but after 2 years + x year of development there are some things WHICH ARE set in stone and should be communicated to us the gamers/testers...hopefully.

It just reminded me of the bowl of goat's milk that old Winthrop used to put outside his door every evening for the dust demons. He said the dust demons could never resist goat's milk, and that they would always drink themselves into a stupor and then be too tired to enter his room..

Since this game is using an existing ruleset we already know what the rules are supposed to be.

For the record, I haven't played 5e tabletop. I came in with an open mind assuming that some things might have to be changed in a video game. After playing I found out there are many things that just don't feel right in BG3. I looked up the 5e rules and found out many of those things that don't feel good in BG3 actually have much better rules in 5th edition. Things like throwing potions, insane jumping height, pumped up Shoving, nonsensical dipping of weapons, help action being OP, unlimited resting... Magic item design and abundance also goes against the spirit of D&D in favor of a mind numbing loot grind.

I'm fully expecting a Core Rules difficulty setting where none of the poor homebrew exists.

Larian has grown a lot though, and narrative/cinematic departments aren't working on combat systems. Some of the Larian's oddities that persist in BG3 existed for three games now, so I don't hope that 1.0 be much tighter designed then what we have now. Narrative hasn't been a strength of previous Larian games and while much more effort is put into that side of the experience, and as of now I am not convinced it will land in "fine" category, especially that they seem to riff on D:OS2 a lot.

Wouldn't that be nice, but I don't expect to see anything of that sort. All my hopes rest in modding support, and modders with far more programming and design competence then myself.

Larian is hand-cuffing certain aspects of the game for Larian reasons.
Possibly for it to balance the extra things they want to add.

I do not believe a true 5e game couldn't be more faithfully adapted.
I just think "that game" isn't what Larian believes will be fun.

I am placing a lot of faith in the mod community to give us what Larian won't.
Like heavy armor proficiency for my Light domain cleric.

My fear is they butcher multiclassing like the reaction system.
And modders can't fix it.
