Yes, this is automatic.

The "how" depends on your settings (right click game in Steam > Properties > Update).
By default, you just need to :
- Launch Steam.
- Wait for any potential update to finish downloading. Playing other games will pause downloads.
- The game will be available to play when the update is done.

Keep in mind, if you chose to play a previous patch, there won't be any hotfix applied.
So make sure that the beta selected in set to "None" (right click game in Steam > Properties > Betas).
