Right past the first chunk of mithral ore (after the animated armor), there's a perception check that I just can't make. I tried enhance ability, guidance, and several reloads, but can't do it. Does anybody know what it's for?

could be a chest or the mephit ambush... also perception is one of Astarion skills so go get him and come back to take another look

Luke Skywalker: I don't, I don't believe it.
Yoda: That is why you failed.

On early level, Astarion and Shadowheart both have +3 in Perception. Astarion has proficiency bonus (+2 until Level 5) and +1 Wisdom. Shadowheart has +3 Wisdom.
However, after the ASI at Level 4, since Shadowheart is a Cleric (class that uses Wisdom to cast), Shadowheart could have +4 Perception (while Astarion is still at +3 total).

In addition to what you've listed, try and take your character(s) with the highest Perception skill (not Wyll or Gale) in priority.
Every characters get to roll the dice I believe. So sometimes, I would go to camp and switch companions. It was sometimes quicker then reloading OO
I don't have any better advice than that, I'm afraid 😅
Good luck (literally)!

I figure it's a chest - it's the first ore chunk, not the one with the mephits. I reloaded six times and used all of my party each time, including Astarion with guidance and Shadowheart with guidance and enhance ability. Maybe if I get bored I'll go back to the save and try again. smile

you need to roll a 23 to pass this check. It is a chest. Not sure why it is so high since the loot isn't that good.

I believe for the chests you can stand on the spot, right click a Shovel and dig without being able to see the exact location. Might need a few tries to locate the chest exactly, but I've done this in my most recent playthrough for checks I failed.

Reminder: If you have the Summon Scratch ability, bring the dog along! Scratch has a Scratch and Sniff ability that will point you at buried chests. You can dig even if you fail the survival/perception check, just dig a few feet in front of where he points until you find the chest. smile
