I understand that it doesn't actually use a reaction, but you're supposed to be given the option upon defeating someone to kill or incapacitate them anyway, pretty much the same.
The rigmarole of toggling nonlethal damage on during a fight (put usually only for one combatant like Fezzerk), and then remembering to toggle it off is a bit of a hassle.

Does the game track anymore if we knock Fezzerk unconcious? It certainly did at first, but while I didn't test it recently I have a hunch it works now more like most RPGs - so he initiates conversation once his HP gets low/is depleted. With how little support non-lethal attack has I wouldn't be surprised if it was removed altogether.

Non-lethal as a reaction would be annoying if it triggered on every downing - having it to disable on and off would be more or less what we have now. Personally, I liked the first itiration when it was just a low damage skill you would use. I am pretty sure it was essencially what pommel strike is now. Why not give just give back sucker-punch to everyone?

You'd change it to not ask you if you're not expecting to use it during the fight.

Fezz surrenders if his health goes low enough, but I'm pretty sure the game won't save him if you do enough damage at once.

Even if you knock someone down by accident you can just finish them off.

Actually my recent encounter with Hag was hilarious. When she changed into Mayrina I toggled non-lethal just so I won't kill the girl by accident - I ended up "knocking unconcious" the illusion and the effect tranfered over to Hag herself - who had still just under 100HP left. So she just lied there unconcius as my noble paladin beat her to death. Seriously, I need to work hard in this game to accidently not cheese it.

Is going around finishing people off more or less annoying? With a prompt you'll never accidentally knock someone out, furthermore the reaction menu is better real estate for the passive toggles.

I imagine you could even set up a system where you're only asked to knock out important NPCs;;
