The announcement of the new companions led me thinking about the companions we have to pick at release. Has Larian decided on that we will have to choose a small number companions before a certain point of the game? Is this official now?

If that is the case, I want to brainstorm a bit:

What do you think would be the best pick for a "Lolth-sworn" male drow who has turned his back on Lolth but is still heavily scarred by that past? A drow who likes freedom, some carnal pleasures, money and power, can perform (I like that option for charismatic characters) and at the same time he can still help a helpless being as long as that said being does not disrespect or annoy him. Ah, yes, he would most certainly not like the Absolute very much (regardless of the power, a parasite has been violently inserted in his head)

The party of choice is Shadowheart (because my character is a drow and a criminal and darkness is his ally; he also knows the importance of keeping some secrets) and Astarion (another creature of the night; plus he is stealthy, capable of dealing enormous amount of damage and... the last but not least is funny). Of course, I know this is my decision to make but let's speculate a bit.

1. I liked Jaheira and Minsc in BG1 & BG2 but I do not see them working with that character (assuming they are companions). Lae'zel is out of the question. She is too bossy, delightful to occasionally annoy and she is extremely loyal to an external party (Shadowheart is too but Shar is less alien than a lich queen of astral creatures)

There is a fierce competition between Gale, Wyll and maybe Karlach (not sure about her, she might change on release)

2. Wyll is another scarred personality with a sense of humor. He seems to be ready to do anything for revenge. It is easy to win his loyalty, too. I think personality wise, he might be the most appealing/intriguing from the rest.

3.Karlach... little is known about her (I do not intend a complete new run before release so I am not sure about the last patch) but a capable warrior who is not fanatically tied to "good" or "evil" is a plus. She might be too principled/less flexible if she indeed is a paladin and this is a drawback.

4. Gale is (surprisingly) winning the contest at the moment. Does my character finds his character fascinating? No, actually he might be the most boring of the lot. But Gale's curse is what makes him problematic. I can not imagine my character letting a walking bomb wander freely. Imagine he explodes when my character or somebody dear to him is in town? Also the fact he is a wizard synergizes well with a sorcerer.

Any thoughts?
