Currently playing a Sorc and opened the Necromancy of Thay. I used my Sorc options to expose the book and calm the magic, but didn't learn any spells from it. When having the artifact conversation with Gale, he says I already have an artifact he can use. The Necromancy of Thay is the only artifact I have but it isn't an option to give to him. So either calming the magic makes it useless to Gale and the dialogue incorrectly triggered or it is still useful to him and is missing as an option to give.

I think it is the case that you can’t give Gale the book if you’ve read it. Did you not get the ability to cast Speak with Dead from reading it?

Even if so, it does sound as though there’s a bug with the Gale dialogue. Possibly the flag is set when we get the book but the game doesn’t properly handle the fact it becomes unusable for him. In fact, I’m not sure how it manages other items if you get them and then get rid of them before handing them over. I’ve played this game so many times and there’s still so much I haven’t tried!

If you are wearing the speck with undead neckless try taking it off... If the spell remains in your spell list (level 3) then the book worked

P.s no you can't give it to Gale after reading it yourself

Wasn't looking for a way to fix this, just reporting a bug. I used the sorc options to reveal what the book was. The last sorc option was to basically give the book a magical zanax. Never read it by selecting the turn page options, so didn't learn speak with dead. I chose these class options, the book is the only artifact in the party, Gale says I have something already but no option to give it to him.

So have you found the gem and been able to open the book? IIRC you can’t give it to Gale (or Astarion who wants it for a different reason) until you’ve completed the relevant quest.

It was never given to Gale or Astarion, I kept it. Yes I have the gem, use option to place gem in book, open the book, use only the sorcerer dialogue options, 1st to attune to the magic, 2nd to use sorc powers to make the book reveal itself, 3rd to calm the book. After those 3 successes, book closes. Because I didn't choose to read it or turn any pages, I didn't learn speak with dead. But it still triggered dialogue with Gale, during the deer stew cut scene when he reveals he need artifacts, saying I already have an item, again only item right now is the book, but it isn't listed as an option to give. So a maybe a bug that either: it is useless when the sorcerer option to calm the book is used and the dialogue that I have something already shouldn't have happened or since I didn't read the book or got the spell, it should still be of use for Gale's condition and should be an option.

Ah, thanks for the clarification. It’s been a while since I did a sorceror playthrough so I couldn’t remember how their interaction with the book went. You’re right that it seems as though something needs tweaking here to make this hang together. Sounds like something it’s worth reporting to Larian as a bug in case it’s not already on their radar.

I just reloaded a previous save to try to read the book with my sorceress (I had already given the book to Astarion in this playthrough - a most likely stupid, but entertaining choice), to see the special dialogue options for sorcerers.
Gale's dialogue seems to be still bugged in the way you described it, Meavwen.

Does anyone know if reporting a bug here is as helpful as directly reporting it?

Salo, the Larian Community Manager confirmed relatively recently that bugs reported here are picked up by support.

However, for bugs that only occur in specific scenarios I’d guess sending a save game to them might still be helpful.

Thank you for this information, Red Queen!

I am not an expert, but this seems to be an issue with flags, like you said. So in this case, I think the bug is likely independent from specific scenarios or technical specifications.

SOME bugs reported here are... others go ignored
for example the consul bug is still in the game
[Linked Image from gog.com]

the basic steps are;
insert the rune to unlock the consol
pick the interact option but then pick the ignore option instead of rolling
at this point you return to the main manu and can try all the other options like arcane tests before you leave... it doesn't matter

if you re-interact with this pod your game is locked and the only way out is to load a save game

it has been report, this pod to get Shadowheart on the ship [instead of the beach] was added about a year back and its a simple case of missing a short line of code but they have not got around to it yet
