Entered from the back-way the cave where the Zhentium merchants had the important chest.
Agreed to help protect the merchants.
Once the Gnoll fight started whenever it was Rugan's turn "the ally is plotting move" blurb showed up but Rugan took no action.
Olly shot his bow as expected.

Not a big deal just a bug that slowed down combat as I had to watch the progress bar while Rugan eventually decided to do nothing.

You had no dialogue? Normally Rugan says something like 'Stay out of it, let the heroes risk their life for some stranger" (to Olly), not verbatim but basically he states that they will be out of the fight. Was that missing?

This happened to me after I made the Gnolls brace the fire and attack Rugan and Olly. They were my enemies in the fight.

Coming in from the back of the cave you get a completely different dialogue.
Rugan actually hired me to help protect him.

Both Rugen and Olly were actively on my side and taking turns in combat similar to the allies at the gate of the Druid grove.
(I've never come in from the back of the cave before so this is the first time I've encountered that conversation. You have to jump over a big rock and disarm a few trip wires but my whole party was inside the cave before the fight started.)

Olly acted as you would expect he shot his bow on his turn.
Rugen spent his entire turn "planning his next action" and then didn't do anything.

Oh, I see. Both very different scenarios that I'm accustomed to. Both seems like a issue indeed 😅

Yes, I can confirm the bug and also describe other problems with this walkthrough: You can run into the rock in front of the cave entrance and when you enter the cave through the back-way entrance and trigger the trap, you are knocked down lying on the ground, but the animation shows only half your body and the other half is covered by the ground. Furthermore, the graphics show angular hexfield-like floor contours with fluids. The remains (plank) of the destroyed ladder lie horizontally on the rock stairs and should actually tip down with the longer end (gravity).

Now to the actual walkthrough bug. The cutscenes / dialogues after the main dialogue with Rugan are similarly choppily short as with Benryn, whom you can save from the fire in Waukeens Rest. Not even switching to TB in advance helps, because the Gnolls are not covered by it and join shortly after, as in stealth, but this abruptly interrupts the dialogue and initiates the fight.

The AI of the Gnolls is surprisingly clever despite their blind rage, which bothers me a bit because it feels contradictory when they're in a blood frenzy, but act tactically rational. The Gnoll archers shoot their AoE arrows at the alchemist fires lying on the ground and explode them, which can do quite a bit of damage to Olly and Rugan. This would be more for a higher level of difficulty.... Depending on the turn order, the Zhents die at 90% and the stupid shove mechanic makes them die even more easily. You'd think that ranged fighters wouldn't go into melee range, but Olly shooting his arrows or throwing his alchemist fire and then running into the mass of Gnolls just to shove one of them into the fire is absolutely illogical and often leads to his one hit death by the Flint.... With Rugan it would probably be the same, but since he is completely buggied incapable of action, he also does nothing...

It took me a few tries to ensure their survival and I like this route and outcame more than the other ones. There is still some room for improvement here.
