I love the BG franchise so I am very excited for BG3. I do hate a lot of things about it though but yes there are good things too. I just find it very hard to point out the positives when there's so many negstives. They said it's been FIVE years and this mess is what we have to work with until August. Wow.
Positives:
It's Baldur's Gate (My 2nd all time favorite game is BG2 EE) It's D&D The NPCs seem pretty cool (mostly) The storyline seems very interesting. I am very excited for the full deal.
Hmm. Ok. There's got to be more. lol.
Please feel free to add to this short list of mine.

To name a few:
- Combat feels very dynamic for a turn-based game - Voice acting is phenomenal - Replayability value is beyond limits, I have more than 1000 hours in this game since the beginning of the EA - The art direction is top notch - Music is always on point - The world interactivity this game offers is unmatched by any other CRPG, in my opinion - The game doesn't shy away from depicting violence where necessary - The amount of class/race specific dialogue lines is huge and lets you truly live your character - Level design is solid, there are multiple ways of handling every situation yet it feels more like a sandbox, rather than having forced solutions

I like SOME of the environment reactivity. The boulder trap at the Goblin fight actually surprised me the first time and made me gag.
I don't play Bard, but I love the interaction of the instrument sound when spells are cast.
I like the detail in the Channel Divinity for Clerics with the deity symbol showing.
I enjoy that it is up to 4 players. Other games that are competitors really lose out on this, especially Pillars of Eternity.

Multiplayer is THE thing that elevates some CRPGs above the rest. Crazy moments inherent to the genre are absolutely best enjoyed with friends. Rolling a crit at the most unexpected times, deploying combos, having a laugh around a campfire because we shoved the dwarf, all those fun things that would make you only raise an eyebrow when playing with NPCs.

"The boulder trap at the Goblin fight"??? Huh? Can you please explain this one to me? I don't know of any boulder trap at the "goblin fight". Do you mean the gnolls (not goblins)? If so then yes I know what you're talking about and yes it was quite a surprise. Lol. I'm just wondering if I'm missing something at a "goblin fight"?
4 players? I actually preferred the use of 6 back in BG1 & 2.

As I stated during D:OS2 Vs PoE2 thread back on Obsidian forum, those are different games. A bit like left4dead Vs Doom. What you prefer, will be based on what game you are looking for. From my perspective it is Larian who is behind the competition in their narrative design, companions, quest design, worldbuilding and overall playability. But yeah, if you are looking for a coop RPG no one does it better then Larian - mostly because no one else really does it. At best it is coop functionality added to a single player game, while Larian adds single player functionality to a coop title.

I wouldn't say they are behind, as you said they are not chasing the same market. Larian is making CRPGs for everyone, not just long time fans. With this scope in mind, you have to make concessions to not alienate your playerbase. Story has to align to modern standards, quests have to show clearly defined stakes, companions are there are protagonists more than gameplay tools and all interactions have to be as streamlined as possible. In that regard, I agree that only Larian is there to provide a gateway to more specialised games, like Critical Role is a gateway to tabletop RPG.

I love the quest design (no fetch quests or other boring quests), the map design (no large, empty boring areas and minimal loading screens), the cinematic dialogue, high quality voice acting, reactivity, custom pc, and having companions with banter, in-depth quests, romance, and lots of dialogue and scenes. Now that nonorigin companions are confirmed, I am hopeful that there will be a range of companions to pick from. These things put it above most single player games I have played. For me the multiplayer is okay but not having group dialogue like SWTOR has makes it less fun because only one person can participate in dialogue (seems more like single player dialogue).

Best game ever - simple as that & we are not even at full release yet. BG3 has everything I want - sure there’s always room for improvents and additions but as far as I’m concerned everything they add between now and full release can only make a great game even better.
Edit: make it run perfect on steam deck & it’s a slam dunk !

If this were a brand new original game with no franchise ties then this game would check all the boxes. It is by far the best game Latian has produced.
I won't add any BUTS here...however (not a but)...its about time to make a punch-list thread to acknowledge the addressables.
The city looks amazing! It will be great to visit all the famous locations as well as see how many of the 'burbs they made.

- The game doesn't shy away from depicting violence where necessary sorry but what? lets make a game where evil players kill the kids... "o my God you can kill the kids"... not anymore because Larian blocked it will a bullshit untested forcefield no they didn't fix the plot to give you any logical way to have the kids get away they just placed them in a forcefield and one assumes the kids walk to B-Gate after the goblins kill every druid and leave
Luke Skywalker: I don't, I don't believe it. Yoda: That is why you failed.

To me personally being able to kill kids is not a necessary depiction of violence.
