It is an issue since the beginning of EA - darkness works incorrectly and it breaks warlocks!

How it works now

you cast darkness on a ground, so it's an aoe spell. creatures outside the spell CAN attack enemies inside it. darkness DOESN'T move when cast on a creature with them

How it should work

darkness can be cast on yourself/other creature. creatures outside darkness can't attack creatures inside. the spell MOVES with its target

Some examples

Current implementation

you are a warlock. you cast darkness on the ground. you chose devil's sight invocation. you go inside the darkness to do some damage. but then some random goblin from miles away shoots you and the spell is gone, because it broke your concentration. you wasted one of your 2(!) spell slots for nothing. so the spell itself isn't viable, devil's sight invocation isn't viable too

How it should work

you are a warlock. you chose devil's sight invocation. you cast darkness on YOURSELF and then just move to your enemies with it. enemies inside darkness have disadvantage on attack rolls, enemies outside it miss. So it becomes really powerful as it should be, because it costs your precious spell slot and you wasted your invocation to make it wok

Larian pls do warlocks justice

Definitely agree that Darkness should be castable on yourself or other friendly creature.

However, as I understand it, creatures outside the spell should be able to attack creatures inside it, just with Disadvantage. In 5e, unless a creature takes the Hide Action, their position is always known due to sound/footprints/etc.

From the Vision and Light section of the PHB:
Darkness is a heavily obscured area which "...blocks vision entirely. A creature effectively suffers from the Blinded condition when trying to see something in that area."
Blinded: "Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature's Attack rolls have disadvantage."

maybe i was wrong on outright misses, but at least disadvantage would be nice. i tried to do my mini hexblade run(darkness, devil's sight and melee combat) run, but it just wasn't working

Enemies having disadvantage makes a big difference, especially for an AI that might target a character they have disadavantage on less often(?).

Oh, and idk if BG3's code accounts for this, but certain spells require you to see the target, and thus can't be used on a character inside of Darkness. I forgot about that.

This is some messed up shit ...
When i was testing darkness in patch 9 i would swear i was unable to attack from both inside and outside ... as if border of darkness was some kind of wall or something.
No matter if i had Devil's Sight or not.

As for debate ...
To me disadvantage also seems lot more probable, than absolute impossibility to be hit. :-/

Considering how difficult it is to get a large percentage of tabletop players to run darkness correctly, I have very small hopes for Larian being able to. This issue has been battered about the forums since EA started, bugged by countless people countless times, and it has never been addressed.

It's ironic because DOS1&2 are brutal on LOS and being able to target through things like smoke and steam, and has a pretty good "Darkness" (can't remember the spell's name) spell implemented so you'd think they'd get it right in BG3.
