So I have discovered 2 spots where the BOOAL fight seems to be bugged. I hid and stood on the mushroom platform to left of BOOAL's alter. And the mushroom platform directly in front of it, the one connected to the ladder. I have been able to attack him with ranged attacks and never enter combat. I had BOOAL locked in combat with 1 or more characters, then a ranged character can just sit there and attack freely and kill him, never having entered combat.

**Edit
I did not have to make stealth checks.

Yes, the game handles this sort of scenario very poorly.

See, eg, https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=839959&page=1 for more discussion of problems related to combat not triggering for all party members. These problems do take a number of forms, and it’s true that the game doesn’t always force a stealth check.

If you try to play the game being as stealthy as possible, it’s guaranteed you’re going to come across broken, dodgy behaviour. It’s why I don’t do it, though I wish I could.

I think I found a comfortable alternative to this kind of thing. My current playthrough, I'm using Astarion. I unchain him from the group, enter the dialoge / fight. Then position him via stealth or potion if necessary and get a free backstab. I feel that it's very fitting from a RP standpoint to have a rogue / thief hiding in the shadows. Feels like it would be in a thiefs nature to do that. Then he gets put into combat after getting a backstab.

I did find one situation where he got away with a 1 shot kill and didn't trigger combat (Zhentaram Outpost). It felt like he systematically took out a couple targets to give us the advantage.

Unfortunately, for players that would like to play in a 'reasonable world', a world where things actually makes sense, they'll need to barrel head first into the enemy. Otherwise, cheese is almost certainly assured given their implementation of stealth. In fact, their broken stealth system auto-hides you after attack, I often notice. Players should be able to avoid cheese, the largest offender being the stealth system, we shouldn't be forced to use it.
