PrefaceSomething has been bothering me a bit since the release of Patch 8 where Highlights were introduced but I haven't seen any thread on this, so there it is.
1) InconsistenciesThere are inconsistencies concerning the application of highlights on hair depending on classes/sub-classes and female/male models. To illustrate, I took the "
Hair 3a" hairstyle with the "Raven Black" hair color and applied
100% "Red8" Highlights.
I then applied that combo to each model (male/female) of each classes and sub-classes.
Here's the result.
There seems to be
three main types of highlights :
- Type 1 : very discret highlights (ie. Female Asmodeus Tiefling)
- Type 2 : moderate amount of highlights (ie. Female Mephistopheles Tiefling)
- Type 3 : heavier dose of highlights (ie. Female Zariel Tiefling)

The
distribution seems to be as follow (as observed with Hair3a) :
- Type 1
○ Female : Drow (Seldarine); Halfling (Lightfoot); Human, Githyanki*; Tiefling (Asmodeus).
○ Male : Elf (High) ; Githyanki. - Type 2
○ Female : Tiefling (Mephistopheles).
○ Male : Tiefling (Zariel). - Type 3
○ Female : Elf (All) ; Drow (Lolth-Sworn) ; Dwarf (All)* ; Half-Elf (All) ; Halfling (Strongheart) ; Gnome (All) ; Tiefling (Zariel).
○ Male : Elf (Wood) ; Drow (All) ; Human ; Dwarf (All) ; Half-Elf (All) ; Halfling (All) ; Gnome (All) ; Tiefling (Asmodeus/Mephistopheles).
*Hair 3a's ponytail looks extra stiff in those cases (
example)
Those inconsistencies are also visible with
other hairstyles :

2) Harsh/overpowering highlightsSome highlights look harsh and/or pretty much replace the initial hair color (=overpowered), even with low intensity. To illustrate, I mainly looked at
"Hair 3a", "Hair 26a" and "Hair 33b".
Example 1 : The "Type 3" of highlights for "Hair 3a" creates a weird veil over the entire hair during actual gameplay and cutscenes (but not during Character Creation).
From 🐺 to 👩🦳 :

Example 2 : The "Type 3" (left) of highlights for "Hair 33b" pretty much hides the original color. As a nitpick, "Type 1" highlight (right) has some harsh transition between highlights and hair color.
Example 3 : The "Type 3" of highlights for "Hair 26a" has some harsh transitions and overpowers the original hair colors.
Suggestions- Add an option to choose between the different existing types of highlights, regardless of which male/female model or classes/sub-classes was selected.
- Fix harsh highlights and highlights being rendered differently between Character Creation and during actual gameplay (including cutscenes).
I would also point out that "overpowered" highlights won't be as much of an issue with the existence of an option to choose highlighting types. In fact, those can be helpful to create new hair colors (instead of being used as highlights ).
