For RP reasons :
Quote
Bards of the College of Valor are daring skalds whose tales keep alive the memory of the great heroes of the past, and thereby inspire a new generation of heroes. These bards gather in mead halls or around great bonfires to sing the deeds of the mighty, both past and present. They travel the land to witness great events firsthand and to ensure that the memory of those events doesn't pass from the world. With their songs, they inspire others to reach the same heights of accomplishment as the heroes of old.

And/or if you want to play a martially-minded Bard since you will now have "Combat Inspiration" and proficiencies in Medium Armor, Shield and Martial Weapons. That and an "Extra Attack" at level 6. Other sub-classes exist for bards that want to be more martially-minded but not in the PHB.

This is a fairly good option but not one that "min-maxers" would pick 🙂

No problem.

I also prefer Lore bard, for RP reason (what the college of lore is) and also, it gives access to two additional non-bard spells at level 6 which can help give more flavor to the character.

I also very much like the concept of "Cutting Words" 😄

Yes, with the EA level cap at level 5, before college of valour bards get their extra attack, and combat inspiration being bugged at level 5, college of lore feels a much more obvious pick at this stage.

Hopefully they’ll come into their own once we get more levels with the full release, though from what I can tell from my reading so far it looks like college of valour still won’t be an obvious choice without at least some RP motivation.

Valour is still considered one of the weakest subclasses even in full official DnD, though that's likely because College of Swords exists there.

I still intend to run Valour once the full game is out, since my planned party is heavy on the magic side. I hope Sharpshooter feat is implemented by then, as it'll be the only thing that allows my Bard to keep up as an archer contributing physical damage.

Yes Valour is more of a niche filler. I'm currently playing a Bard with a flute and hope to add a blowpipe as a flavorful range weapon (and whip as flavorful melee / mid-range weapon) later. The damage is irrelevant here as a coup de grace finisher for low hp targets or using stun ammo or other control ammo, or if you are silenced and can't cast, then the blowpipe is good. Extra attack helps if you miss the first time. I can stay at 14 dex bcs medium armor helps better than light amor to maintain concentration and can instead put my ability points in charisma or other stats.

I really hope they add the College of Swords Bard subclass to the release version, that's my favourite Bard subclass. Do you think there's any chance of this?

I plan on Barding my N/E Barbarian Berserker =) . Dipping a bit of Bard level/s. He will be my foul mouthed, story telling, drum beating Skald. No pointy helmets please...

I actually enjoyed Valor Bard in bg3, when normally I prefer Lore bards in table top. They can get good AC, can heal, provide good support spells, and combat inspiration i have found to be quite useful. Also, deal good damage with a weapon. It's perhaps not the best option, but as someone who doesn't care for the traditional tank classes (except barbarian) I like it, and intend to have Tav be one.

That's what the Lore of Valour is about ...

In the dimmest past Bard was a sub-class of ... Druid. The people who remembered the Tales of Times of Yore, from the days before the Internet the birth of the Gods, who plunked on some instrument and passed on Lore :P

Nah too much into the bard line. This is a Berserker that likes to tell stories, play a tune, insult opponents in battle and when all else fails, it's time to get serious and bash some heads in. He lives for a good fight and drinks the night away. He does not talk his way out things or bang the local succubus/dragon/kobold (well maybe the succubus... the blood war actually seems alright with him and if she's his ticket he may just ride that pony all the way to the nine hells).

Funny though, he is modeled after my dad who was a "bill collector". Man didn't live long but dang... the stories he could tell, the laws he broke, the lives he ruined... I looked up to him all the while hating his guts... Dude on his death bed smoking a blunt IN the hospital and dared the doctor's and staff to do something about it...

The only law he followed was what he wanted to do next.
