I also put Tav into the mix for people to say if they think the characterization of some companions is worse than a blank slate.

The first four slots will be interesting if a locked party comes to pass, the first three if you want to play as Tav.

The results here aren't surprising though. I fully expect the top 3 slots to be dominated by some combination of Shadowheart, Gale, and Astarion. With the rare Lae'zel in 2 or 3.

It's interesting to see Gale and Lae'zel clearly put in second and fourth.

As part of the Anglosphere, and a chauvinist, someone will have to tell me what that means for ranked polling.

Well, at least I know that I’m going to play a Tav on my first playthrough so can and have voted in that poll .

As per my comment in Zerubbabel’s poll I don’t feel it’s true to say between Gale, Astation and Shadowheart that I like any one more than the others. And as I also mentioned, for me Wyll and Lae’zel are tied for fourth for different reasons. And while I can see me creating custom (Tav) companions to try out different class combos, I’d certainly put a custom companion behind all the pre-written ones so far. So as a result I haven’t voted in the companion ranking polls, and though I’m slightly tempted just to put in some random ranking so I can see the results I’ll wait on that until the poll is older so as not to skew the early results.

When it comes to playing as origin characters, my current expectation is that I’ll do more than one run with different Tavs before trying an origin character, and I guess my opinion of what origin character I’ll try first will change depending on what I see of their full stories as companions. At the moment though, while he is tied as my least favourite companion, I’m probably most interested in playing as Wyll. I just think it’ll be fun playing a warlock character with a fully realised patron, which I’m assuming isn’t going to be possible with a Tav.

Again, not surprising. Looks like it's fairly consistent across userbases.

Astarion at 4 is shocking with how vocal his advocates are on reddit. SH is not at all surprising of course, Larian's push to make her likable definitely worked.

I should have asked if the party being locked after Act I would change whether or not you'll play as Tav.

It's pretty clear you will get a girl demon hunter for helping out against her hunters... That lady is my number 1

Not for me, though I do still very much hope that the party won’t be locked after act 1. I’m not sure whether there’s been any more recent reconfirmation, and if not I’m going to keep my fingers crossed Larian have thought the better of that idea.

I do think it might be fun if companions would go off and do stuff without you if they’re not in the party later in the game, but would still rejoin you if they were free and had a high enough attitude. I can’t currently envisage any plot contrivance that rules out all but three party members at the end of act 1 being remotely satisfying.

Is this poll supposed to be answered based on story and dialogue or based on their skills and abilities?

Personally I was taking both into account when making my assessment. If it’s meant to be one or the other that could change my answer .

I love this idea. This is actually a lot like how I play Baldur's Gate II. I have a few mainstays, and one or two slots for people to come and go as I do their personal quests.
Maybe we'll be given a number of different possible 'cures' and which one he choose to pursue, will determine who's on board.

Making this already required 6 polls, ungainly enough. Asking people how they weight party composition between personality and utility, what class they want to play first, you could really get into it.

According to something I heard a while ago, most first time D&D players roll human fighters, which might skew party composition on a whole in BG3. I forget what the "Vault-Dweller's" class was when the EA first released but I think it was either fighter or cleric. I looks like most people will be running a Tav on their first playthrough, something to keep in mind.

No, I don’t think so. Unless something happens to really create a gap between origin and Tav that would make me feel like I am loosing out. For now, I am fine sacrificing one character’s story arch.
