I haven't experienced any crashes in BG3 since the day of release, but yesterday the game suddenly crashed while I was creating a new character. When I restarted, the resolution was changed and display switched to fake-fs. Restoring true fullscreen also restored the resolution originally selected by me. The crashes, however, kept occurring.

I then switched from Vulkan to DX11 and for a short while, that seemed to have fixed the issue, but today the crashes resumed. Verify and Repair did nothing to stop them. Currently I am re-installing after seeing at least six crashes before the cut scene with the Nautiloid crashlanding in Faerun. At one time, a box displayed a "DX11 error," but switching back to Vulkan did not change anything.

Drivers are current, and I have tried launching the game directly via the .exe files, sidestepping the launcher. No good.

I am not using any mods whatsoever.

I'm hoping the reinstall will resolve the issue, but in case it doesn't, I'd be grateful for any suggestions as to what else I can try!

P.S.: I have the GOG version of the game, in case that is in any way relevant.

P.S.S: Reinstall didn't do the trick, either. :-(

First it matters if you used off line installers but if you used Galaxy then no Gog is functionally the same as Steam

What you describe with the reset picking a different type can be one of 3 things. In order of likely;

Hardware - you swapped out a harddrive / GPU and the part isn't getting power or is seated wrong
The test would be to remove the GPU and reset it + all cables but I would expect other games (any GPU intensive software) to also play up

Dual system - if you play / swarp settings between more than one system
The test here is to disable cross - play in the settings and see if that also stops the crashes (single player) and if that does then your network is the problem

Last one is software - is it just Bg3 your system locks up on ? I confirm the current build is buggy but plays and I'd start by looking at folder locations:
Is your doc inside Microsoft OneDrive, is anything installed to C program files or are you running Norton antivirus perhaps?

edit: goto your vid settings where is says f fullscreen or window mode at the top it should say which device is rendoring the image... just confirm your Gpu [not the intergrated chip] is what the game detects i.e, NvidiaXYV

Thanks for the elaborate tips! Alas, none of that is the case, and it is indeed my GPU that's handling the graphics. Right now I'm suspecting corrupted save files, and am trying if a fresh playthrough will go better.

I got these too. Other games ran fine. However, shortly after my PC started crashing at random for a bit. The type as if you pulled the electricity from one second to the next. Then, that stopped some days later.

I've been having issues with random freezes for a while in bg3 before that. First, disabling cross save fixed it. Then it came back and my game would freeze for up to 10s at a time. Then, the freezes got shorter, but my game crashed.

After a crash that shut my whole PC down, the Bg3 launcher disappeared. At this point, I gave up on early access lmao

Started a new playthrough and so far, so good. Was also able to load another recent playthrough. Hope the game stays this stable—and that all of these and other issues will indeed be things of the past after August 31st, 2023!

that will be hardware then and Silver i'd assume your system is heating up if a laptop try aircon or a cooling pad... a desktop would prob be dust

Thank you. I will look into it. Unfortunately, in a week at soonest because the person I live with has been isolating in this room thanks to Covid.

I was thinking about overheating, but I didn't think it was too probable. The crashes were unrelated to how long it's been running, what it's doing, etc. It was very concerning since I'm not tech savvy. I've been playing Witcher 3's GOTY until Covid struck. At least only Bg3 got freezes, so this was still enjoyable.
