If you play a Lolth-Sworn drow and approach Mattis/Silfy in the tiefling camp, Mattis will have some unique dialogue, saying that he's heard stories about drow kidnapping surface children. You can respond in three different ways:
- Do I frighten you?
- Yes, surface-dwellers tell all sorts of lies about us.
- Nonsense, we kill far more children than we enslave.

I picked the third one, because it was marked as unique Lolth-Sworn dialogue. Mattis reacts with nervousness/fear, as one might expect from basically being told. "Yes, I have no qualms with child murder."

However, then the interaction proceeds as it would with any other character, and Mattis will signal Silfy to attempt to pickpocket you.

I don't really understand the logic behind this. I know that removing it would cause you to miss out on the "Recover Your Belongings" mini-quest, but it makes no sense that Mattis would risk antagonizing a Lolth-Sworn drow, especially if you pick the dialogue introduction where you say, "Nonsense, we kill far more children than we enslave."

If someone casually remarks to Mattis that they have no qualms with the killing of children, the cost of Silfy getting caught for pickpocketing now far outweighs the gain (serious injury or loss of life vs a few gold coins).

I think it would be much more logical that if you play a Lolth-Sworn drow and pick that dialogue option, Mattis cuts his losses and doesn't signal Silfy to rob you. Maybe even refuses doing business with you outright.

It's bizarre that he would still risk antagonizing a Lolth-Sworn drow with a robbery after hearing that, and seems to indicate that he doesn't care about Silfy if he's willing to risk her life by sending her to rob a psychopathic maniac, which I doubt is the writer's intention.

It's kind of funny, it's almost like they know you can't actually attack them in-game, regardless of character concept.

Yep, I agree that it would make more sense for the gang to decide not to target a Lolth-sworn drow, especially if they play up to their bad rep.

"You may call it 'nonsense' if you like, but I've heard nonsense, compared with which that would be as sensible as a dictionary!"

You can still kill these kids if you put your thinking caps on... Larian only half assed their force field to protect them

True, but the topic is more on the dialogue/interaction not being logical than the game's mechanics.

My issue is just that I don't think that the robbery interaction Mattis/Silfy have with the PC matches how they should behave with a Lolth-sworn drow, especially one that introduces themselves by basically saying that child murder is something that happens pretty regularly in their cult.

Mattis should be a lot more cautious and wary, and not attempt the robbery. Either refuse to trade and ask you to leave him alone, or just take the gold he can get out of you for normal trading and leave it at that.

O I agree, in fact I would have the kids offer her items they stole from others instead

I agree with the OP. Larian needs to tweak some dialogues and better consider the possible consequences and immersion. I have reported many inconsistencies about dialogues in the recent past.
