rolling our starting stats would be really nice instead of having a set in stone class stats. it would be a really addition

Sure, I remember the rolling mechanic in BG1 & BG2 and it was kinda fun to keep rolling in the hope that you'd get better than "average" attributes, and the sinking feeling that that last roll you just re-rolled was the best one but if you just roll one more time(s)...

I think game data just showed that people were going to keep rolling until they get the best attributes anyway so it makes more sense to just let people build from a pool. That said I'm fine if they want to add this in but I don't see it happening, it's not really part of CRPGs anymore and I don't see it becoming part again.

Can I roll for my stats?
In Early Access we're using Point Buy as the main way to determine stats in Character Creation, but we've heard that there are big fans of rolling stats out there.

No matter what amount of rolls you get, nothing stops you from simply ending the game and start over ... if someone wish to spend five hours rerolling, hoping to get 6x 20 ... i say let them. laugh

Or ... just give us option to also have infinite point buy, so we can ruin our game with whatever stats we want? laugh

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

As far as rolling for stats in a cRPG, it seems to make more sense to just let the player set their scores to whatever they want. As that's what folks actually want to do when rolling and re-rolling ad nauseam. In this way, you just remove the 'busy work' for players that require a certain stat distribution. Any restrictions of the number of re-rolls is easily circumvented.

I genuinely suspect that people really would rather have to roll their stats than just be able to set them to whatever they want. I think people enjoy the artifice and ceremony of rolling. Plus it makes them feel as though they earned their scores, either through luck if the numbers come quickly, or through perseverance if it took them a while.

I’ve seen folk say they’d like the ability to set stats however they want so they can replicate TT characters, which I can sympathise with even though I’m not a TT player myself. But it’s not a function I could see myself using, whereas I probably would use stat rolling. Probably not to begin with, as I think point buy helps generate balanced characters for 5e relative newbies like myself, but I’ve seen more experienced players say that dealing with the wider stat spreads that can be generated by stat rolling can be more interesting and I can see how that would be the case.

I can’t see myself rerolling ad infinitum to get good stats in BG3, even though I was guilty of this in BG1&2, because I think BG3 is more interesting with a character who has weaknesses as well as strengths and having them overpowered from the start would spoil my fun, but don’t see any reason why folk should be barred from rerolling however much they want as long as there are ways to avoid this negatively impacting multiplayer (which don’t necessarily need to be system imposed).

In my ideal world, there would be a variety of different ways players could choose to determine their characters’ stats, and as per the link Ragnarok shared I believe this is what we’re still expecting.

This is a topic that’s cropped up a number of times on these forums before, btw, eg https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=843353&page=1.

Spend five hours rerolling until you get perfect stats? Go for it.

Use Choose Your Stats (CYS) mod, you can set the stats what you want. You can roll for stats then change them in game to those stats.
You already have TT character- make the stats the same.

You dont like the origin stats? Then change them.

Play the game how you wish. Enjoy
