I’ve seen folk say they’d like the ability to set stats however they want so they can replicate TT characters, which I can sympathise with even though I’m not a TT player myself. But it’s not a function I could see myself using, whereas I probably would use stat rolling. Probably not to begin with, as I think point buy helps generate balanced characters for 5e relative newbies like myself, but I’ve seen more experienced players say that dealing with the wider stat spreads that can be generated by stat rolling can be more interesting and I can see how that would be the case.
I can’t see myself rerolling ad infinitum to get good stats in BG3, even though I was guilty of this in BG1&2, because I think BG3 is more interesting with a character who has weaknesses as well as strengths and having them overpowered from the start would spoil my fun, but don’t see any reason why folk should be barred from rerolling however much they want as long as there are ways to avoid this negatively impacting multiplayer (which don’t necessarily need to be system imposed).
In my ideal world, there would be a variety of different ways players could choose to determine their characters’ stats, and as per the link Ragnarok shared I believe this is what we’re still expecting.
This is a topic that’s cropped up a number of times on these forums before, btw, eg
