After watching a few videos about this character, I had this theory that Gortash could be more (VERY MUCH MORE) than he seems.
A lot of people (special mention to WolfheartsFPS and Spell&Shield XD) are linking Gortash with the archdevil Gargauth, demigod of betrayal and corruption, whom, for those who don´t know, appeared in the DND adventure descent into Avernus, traped in a magic shield. Well, what if Gortash, rather than be a worshipper of Gargauth, is the arcdevil himself, their names sound very similar to be just a coincidence. My theory is that Gargauth found a way out of the shield turning into a human being (it´s not the first god of Faerun turned into humnoid) and now is searching for a way to attain godhood again, plotting with the Dead Three/Absolute and the mind flayers. What do you guys think?
He might have been raised by Tymphal

Descent into Avernus happens pretty shortly before the game starts, if I remember correctly, unless Gortash mysteriously appeared in Baldur's Gate that recently and gained as much stature with the city that shortly I'm not sure those events will factor in. Then again, it's also apparently open knowledge that we was raised by a devil, I'm not sure how that works actually, but it's interesting.

What do you guys think?
here is an interesting theory about Larian's word choice pointed out by someone else. "raised by a devil" can be read as raised from child to adult by a devil. but you may read it as raised to power by a devil. meaning he gets to this powerful position due to the aid of a devil. he is the second chosen of the Absolute. technically an archdevil won't serve other deity for its own divine rank .

And maybe devil wasn't meant to be literal...NPC could get confused between demon, devil, vampire lord etc
