If the party has a Noble background character, they should already have a house in the city where the party can stay, even if it isn't a mansion. You could add a mansion the party as a whole could buy if they don't have a noble and it could already be bought if they do and that house/ mansion could be the camp where the party sleeps and gets encounters while in the city

I understand your reasoning, but I also think it could be easily explained why the noble wouldn't have a house. Firstly, all of the origin characters and the PC were abducted and we don't know how long they've been gone. So they could have lost property in that time. Secondly, they could have a reason they don't want to return to their home, I.E. Astarion who is a noble (not going into details for spoiler reasons).
I would like all of the background to get a bit more though. In 5e, each background has a specific ability that are primarily for flavor, which could be cool to see.

Im not really sure if this can be done easily ... I mean, if you create Drow Noble ... it makes no sense for you to own a house in Baldur's Gate, while having Underdark origin tag ... and even that would make more sense than Githyanki Noble ... or even worse Githyanki Noble owning a house in Baldur's Gate, while using all those clueless dialogue choices about Faerun . xD I think house would be quite fine ... Mansion or Keep sounds like a little overkill to me tho. Again tho, i dont see how to tie it properly with backgrounds ... basicaly nobody except maybe Urchin or Outlander should be homeless ... and even those two may have house, since person who lived on street til their 20' can have Urchin background, while now being regular citizen with work and home. Dunno ... House does seem like nice touch ... but many characters would make it quite messy ... The only way i can think about would be giving house as a reward for some big quest ... wich would only change for our [BALDURIAN] taged characters that they are not "rewarding" us with this house, more like "returning it" to us as a reward, after it was confiscated for our long absence. I bet there will still be people complaining about that their character is from Yartar, or Waterdeep, or Neverwinter, or w/e other place they want ... but hey, cant satisfy everyone. So either that ... or adding check box in character creation: Owning a house in Baldur's Gate? Y/N Y > Sory, it was confiscated ... but if you help us, we can do something about it. N > Hey, would you like to get a house?
I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are!

I think that if they wanted to do what you're suggesting with regard to the Baldurian tag, then Larian would need to establish through in-game dialogue early on that our character is from Baldur's Gate and that is an unchangeable fact. they also need to give us a chance to talk about the city more in act one so we as players can build up an affinity for it, otherwise any emotion they tried to bring about would come off as hollow. Also with your suggestion I quoted above, a far better approach would be for us to address that in dialogue. Let our character talk to someone and tell them whether or not we had a house.

Pillars of Eternity1 had a great opening like that - we were able there to define our background further, and reasons to coming to the new setting. Most of it was flavour and player expression, but some of it got reactivity further down the line. I don't think it would be impossible for Larian to have a house reserved for PC in each district of the city - assigned based on background - maybe required to be bought if player picks an Origin and is not from BG. However, the issue I see that we have not one, but 4 players. If 4 players in coop make a custom character with noble background, that would potentially mean 4 seperate mansions for 4 characters. That could be silly. Or of course, house might not exist as such, and camp visuals might change depending on our background - not exiting but logical. But than agian - whole background if we have more than one player.

But the trouble with dialogues is that they are easily missed. Especialy since certain dialogue triggers owerwrite each other, as we were complaining for last two years. I liked this in Mass Effect ... You pick some choices in character creation, and they are imediately implemented in opening sequence, when cap. Anderson (i think?) is talking about you as about potential spectre.

To get around this, they could also borrow from Faction Agent http://dnd5e.wikidot.com/background:faction-agent and set up the Safe Haven feature on the faction you can join.

My thoughts: Each of the Baldurian backgrounds have a connection somewhere in town. Entertainer may have performed at the blushing mermaid, urchin knows a couple of homeless people and can get a little extra info from them, etc. For nobles, you don't have to be the head of a house/family. You could just have a room in a manor that your relative owns. I think little moments like that make more sense than trying to implement a house for everyone based on their background.
Back from timeout.

Definitely hoping that at the very least we can obtain a base in Baldur’s Gate. Even better if there’s a possibility of this being linked to our past in the city if we lived there, though I guess Larian could easily fudge that as our previous abode having been destroyed in the course of one of the tragedies that have befallen the city. And I definitely want to meet folk we knew if we did come from there, as per benbaxter’s post. Picking up another strand of this thread, my ideal would be that we can flesh out our custom Tavs in different ways and have the game respond to that (or choose to remain an enigma if none of the options it gives us fit). I think a mix of picking stuff at character creation - where it can help us crystallise our character and how to play them - and dialogue options that then let us get into detail and roleplay our choices might work best if Larian seriously attempt this. Which I’m not really expecting them too but would love it if they did. For example, I might play a druid. Perhaps they’re an initiate into the Shadow Druids. Perhaps they’re from the Emerald Grove or have visited it in the past, or have at least heard of it and Halsin. I’m a ranger, perhaps I or whoever I’m working for knows something about a spate of mass abductions or disorder caused by a new cult and I’ve been looking into it. As a cleric, my temple might have been disturbed by news of a new deity, or someone pretending to be one. As a rogue (or criminal), I might be attached to the Baldur’s Gate thieves guild, the Shadow Thieves or even the Zhentarim in a junior capacity, or be an independent operator potentially with knowledge of people in these factions. And so on and so on. Then, more generally, do I have family or loved ones, and if so is there a worry they might have been abducted and caught up in the crash too? I think Larian considering all the various ways our custom Tavs could be connected to the story, places and characters and giving us chances to express them (optionally!) in dialogue would do a huge amount to bring them to life. With perhaps some stuff like faction affiliation and where we’re from specified at character creation. I don’t think it should take a huge amount of extra work in the game, either, just - admittedly quite a few - extra lines of dialogue to add flavour in certain contexts. The same basic stuff could still happen, and even things like faction affiliation wouldn’t necessarily make a big difference, just give certain PCs a head start in joining factions others can get in with anyway. Or mean that those factions are a bit more annoyed with us than they’d otherwise be if we go against them. And obviously things like family or lovers and so on would need to be fudged, with them either dying, having gone elsewhere or just living a long way away. But still, that’s my dream (though by no means what I’m realistically expecting) for custom PCs in BG3. A home is the very least of it, and something I’d happily forego if I got some of that other stuff .

I agree, i see so much potential in BG3, and not just the story ARC, imagine Larian giving us a GM client, where they can have hands one in the world... DLCs that add dynamic spawns, i just see so many potential additions, where the world can be reused and kept alive...

As a rogue (or criminal), I might be attached to the Baldur’s Gate thieves guild, the Shadow Thieves or even the Zhentarim in a junior capacity, or be an independent operator potentially with knowledge of people in these factions. This i dont like tho ... Rogues are my main reason why i hate class stereotypes, so many people see them as just Thieves, Spies, or Assassins ... but that is not what Rogue is. :-/ Main translation of Rogue into my language is "Tulák" ... meaning Wanderer. Meaning in my mind that yes, Rogue can be any (or all) of those three things, but they can also be so much more ... and it makes me sad that so many people who is using stereotypes is forgetting. I dunno, maybe im just weird, but my Rogues were allways more like Geralt (from books, except for shorter swords, or straight forward just daggers), basicaly just an agile warior that is not ashamed of using some dirty tricks in battle, with his own codex of honor and quite unconventional set of skills.

At least I get the sense that I keep saying the same things over and over again here, and probably other forum members get that sense too . My deep gnome rogue, for example, who is still my current profile picture, wasn't a criminal just extremely sneaky and nosy. She'd open any container or door but only to see what was there, and would never steal from anyone else ... unless it was something she really, really wanted .

Maybe not background related. But I would like the option of choosing diff camps (base of operations) when in bg. From mansion, keep, tavern, etc that suits diff roleplay choices.
Either way I would like plenty of camp followers depending upon what quests you have completed. Crafting, trainer, lore expert, diff traders etc.
