Hello together,

I wonder if I can steal back from Zarys the casket given to her for the quest. A die roll of 30 is neccessary. However, since I only get +4 for practice and another +4 as dexterety-bonus it is out of reach. Do you have any ideas how to improve stealing even more?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I've never tried stealing the casket from Zarys, but if you have access to the Guidance cantrip (say from Shadowheart or the amulet available) then you can get an additional 1d4 on the next skill check, or if you have a bard with bardic inspiration they can give another party member a d6 to use on an ability check (or saving throw or attack roll). I think there's also a ring somewhere that offers a bonus to sleight of hand, but would need to rummage around to find details (EDIT: here are details of the ring).

Oh, and the Cat's Grace feature of the Enhance Ability spell an give you advantage on dex skill checks including sleight of hand, but obviously that's only useful if a roll of 30 is possible in the first place.

First of all, 20 is auto sucess ... no matter what modifiers you have ... in this game. wink

Second, well ... smile
You want to start with Astarion, prefferably at level 5 ...
- that should allow you get your dexterity on 18 ... meaning +4
- also level 5 incerase your proficiency bonus ... meaning +3
- also you have expertise ... meaning another +3
Then you want him to be fed ... meaning +1
Then you want him to wear Smuggler's Ring ... meaning +2
And it certainly help when you have Guidance on yourself ... meaning +1d4
If guidance can be provided by another character than Shadowheart (wich can be done by using Silver Pendant amulet), its also not a bad idea to give yourself Cat's Grace ... meaning advantage on Dex rolls.

And i believe that is all you can get ...
IN THEORY, you should be able to also add Bardic Inspiration for another +1d6 ... but it never worked to me with Guidance.

Anyway, if i count corectly that should give you ... +14-17 with Advantage ...
+15-23 with Advantage if you manage to sqeeze Bardic Inspiration there. wink

//Edit:
Oh and remember, no matter what modifiers you have ... 1 is auto failure. laugh
So, maybe hold on some inspiration just in case. laugh

Oh, and I've not done much stealing in BG3 so I'm not the best person to advise, but I think folk have said that it seems to work better in turn-based mode as even if you manage to grab something the target might notice it's gone missing and challenge you, and turn-based mode gives you more breathing space to make your escape. I'm also not sure whether folk nearby might challenge you if they see you stealing so you'll probably want to take steps to avoid that too. But if you've been playing around with pickpocketing in the game you probably already know that stuff better than I do. Happy thieving!

In addition:
You can play for halfling and reduce chance to roll 1 twenty times
- Bliss Spores get your +1d6
- Ethel can get your +1 to Dexterity that meaning 20 on 4 level and modifier +5
