I tried playing early access BG3 with two different characters, so far.
Two things I wonder, once Larian releases the final edition of the game.
1) Will I be able to migrate both characters to the same story, later on? as if they meet in the same camp and can travel together? (Including equipment, but of course not duplicating any quest or magical item)
2) Will I be able to adjust some abilities, now that I know better how the game works ?
What is Larian´s plan for people who want to continue from early access to final release, from where they left off ?
I don't remember where I saw it, but it has officially been announced that early access saves wont be transferable to release. Respec hasn't been hinted at.
Saves have been incompatible between individual patches. I am pretty confident that 1.0 will require to start anew, especially as there are supposed to be changes made to act1 (plus new character build options not available before).
Yes, as everyone is saying, we’re expecting to have to start again from the beginning. But on the plus side, we’ve been told that there will be lots of surprises in Act 1 even for early access players, so we won’t just be doing the same thing again. And wouldn’t want to miss any of the new and changed stuff anyway!
It’s not possible to respec our characters in early access. It’s possible we will in the full release, but as far as I’m aware we’ve had no official word on this.
And it is in early access possible to get two custom characters in the same game, but only by setting it up that way from the start. It’s also a workaround and doesn’t work perfectly. We are expecting a more official solution for the full release but other than a hint about “hirelings” on Larian’s Twitter we don’t know much about it.
I wouldn’t expect us to be able to import a character from part way through one game into another given their stories could be incompatible. Though I guess it’s not impossible that we could be given functionality to export our own characters and use their build for hirelings or other custom party members, we’ve not had any hint of such a feature to my knowledge.
"You may call it 'nonsense' if you like, but I've heard nonsense, compared with which that would be as sensible as a dictionary!"
I really wish Larian was clear about this, like a patch that makes a message when you load up the game or something. It's asked a ton on reddit and steam forums. I poor lad was pretty upset he spent 14 hours "for nothing" and had been holding off turning quests in because of the EA level cap, lol.
A lot of more casual newcomers probably don't know that the early access isn't a head start or something and is indeed a very incomplete version of the game that will not transfer to launch.

Not much to say about this at the current moment, but I'll admit that I keep wondering to what extent they'll go about this.
I'm incredibly curious to learn if it will be just a matter of tweaking individual quests and interactions or if there may even been even some... geographical changes, so to speak.
Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN
“there’s much more in the works (or already complete) than what you’ll encounter in an Early Access playthrough.” The goal is for even those with hundreds of hours and multiple playthroughs in Act 1 to have a “whole new experience” at launch.
After the big surprise they made regarding the city, I expect far more than just some tweaks and new options here and there in the first section of Act I I could be disappointed, but I currently set the bar high

Well, Swen did say they intentionally removed stuff from EA, and I'd wager it'd have to be meaningful in some way for them to bother.
Especially if in this final patch Astarion can bite that guy who is chasing him. Some decent dialogue for the next rest could be:
[Astarion] - Player, I need to take care of something, I will be out for a while tonight. Don´t worry, I wll be back in the morning. [you] - ok Astarion, but please be careful who you bite.. no Tieflings, Githyankis, Ogres. [Astarion] - Oh, don´t worry. I just need to teach someone a lesson. [you] - [insight succeeded] - be careful..he got a wooden stake somewhere in his backpack. [Astarion] - and I got a Fog Cloud/sleep/Darkness Scroll in me.
Ok...seriously though, my suggestions would be to:
(1) allow at least 2 built characters on the same story, BUT (2) explicitly mention that extra XP will be given to the whole party if certain companions participate in specific quests;
such as:
Wyll fighting some goblins Laezel meeting Githyankis Astarion fighting the Hag Shadowheart fighting the Absolute fake deity
This way, the player can travel with his 2 own characters, but will also mix the party according to the story
ok, I read Red Queen´s post above, but did not understand how to play with multiple custom characters, unless of course playing in a network with more people, or maybe opening more instances of the game - that which I cannot do here.
Anyway, even with all the patches and updates, I still find the game quite amazing. The visual atmosphere in certain regions looks incredible...not only graphics, but the way Larian designed it.
I am sure Larian accepted a tough challenge with Baldur´s Gate 3 ...because BG 2 was great indeed. In fact, I still got my saves from that game...who knows..maybe a future expansion may actually use some information from the BG 2 savegame.
Another cool expansion would be to venture into Ravenloft, even for a single act...with characters such as Shadowheart and Astarion.
In fact..now with Larian´s 3D world..we can finally imagine a future confrontation against Venger flying in his dark horse. Zooming out the camera to see him far away...but still feasible. I wonder if WoC is waiting for a future 360o VR mechanics in order to produce those special combats against Venger and Tiamat.

Yes, for early access it's a workaround that involves running multiple instances of the game to create custom characters as though starting a multiplayer game, after which you can revert to a single instance of the game. It was tough on my computer creating a party of four (I had to turn all the settings right down low), but a party of two wouldn't be so bad.
I think this is the vid about the custom party workaround that I used after another forum member shared it:
We're of course hoping for something more convenient and official for custom party members come August, but as has been mentioned we're still waiting to find out what that looks like.

What is there to migrate? You can absolutely recreate the same character in the game. I will do that myself.
Yes, the saves will not be compatible because the game will play way differently than EA. But you might try to emulate some of your choices. It will be different, though.
