I know that this year there are some real monsters of games that are going to fight hard for the GOTY. Games like Zelda, Starfield, Resident Evil 4, FF XVI, Diablo IV..., what a year!
But seeing the level of game that Larian is going to release, for me a full-fledged triple AAA, it wouldn't be unreasonable for it to opt for the GOTY, or at least be the best RPG game of the year.
What do you think?

Yes. But depends on what we see on release.

Agree, I have great faith in Larian and BG3, but GOTY in a year like this is a big deal. We can't know for sure how good any game is before getting our hands on it

I think so, yes. There are categories BG3 has a good chance at. Doubtful it will get the main award though, too much competition and too niche a game I think.
...niche is such a weird word when used with a AAA game, but I guess those types of RPGs are the least popular of the bunch. People still ride on the high of open, and very empty worlds in their games.

Zelda is a bulldozer, its mere existence guarantee its GOTY status. Even though I think it shares too many similarities with Breath of the Wild, it had a massive success among the critics and the public racking up perfect scores and millions of sales. I really believe BG3 has a chance against Diablo, Final Fantasy and Starfield, but not against a cultural phenomenon like this. Also GOTY isn't there to promote game quality, merely popularity.
BG3 will most likely win OST of the year though, finger crossed.

It is another niche game because the souls-like games were niche games till Elden Ring. So, if BG3 is going to be so incredible I hope and I was thinking...why not?

Despite my specific problems with it as a role-playing experience, it's certainly worth considering for GOTY. I don't think it has a chance of winning in a year this full of stscked competition like Zelda, FF16 and probably starfield. This really a banner year for games.

How about waiting for release before talking about it being goty?

Well goty is not a single thing, so I'm sure some publication will give them goty, but the majority? Unlikely. Zelda exists.

How about waiting for release before talking about it being goty? +1 Meh. EA alone is GOTY-worthy for me, the final product can't be worse, only better.

We will get its metascore and user reviews before we can realize if it is GOTY. Remember, this year is very, very, very competitive. Target Metascore: 96 or above (To beat Tears of the Kingdom) Target Userscore: 85 or above (To beat Tears of the Kingdom)
Now, Larian can conceivably do it. The original PC release of DOS2 hit 93 Metascore and 8.8 Userscore. That's not too far off from the target, and BG3 does seem like the better game so far.

From what i have seen so far this year ... I believe the only battle there will be between Starfield and Baldur's Gate III.
Its not like the other games were worse, they were great, some even awesome ... they just fade out quite quickly.
Diablo IV is great ... but sory blizzard, its not GOTY material ... especialy not after that fiasco with Imortal ... i know its not fair, but you pissed people off, and they wouldnt support you. Hogwards was great and i thought that have chance for GOTY ... a month and internet forgot it even existed ... shame. Final Fantasy have potential ... but either im moving in wrong circles, since i didnt even noticed its coming ... or it have too narrow fanbase to even hope for GOTY. Same goes to Zelda.
But Starfield and BG-3 ... Oh thats different story.
Those are games that are EVERYWHERE, you cant open an article where they are not mentioned, or at least there are no link to another article about them ... and they are everywhere for few last years.
Personaly i cant wait for Starfield to come out, just so i never hear about it again. xD
I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are!

yeah... I love this game so far, but there is no way it wins GoTY, and it will probably struggle to even get in the larger population's top 5.
Not because it doesn't deserve it, but the competition is made by far larger and more well known companies, and tactical rpg games have had a hard time hitting charts. It could have won in 2021 based on the weak competition, but not this year with so many games that people have been waiting for years to play. Even if Starfield and Zelda were mediocre, they would have an easier time winning than BG3 at its best.
Back from timeout.

I love what this game is shaping up to be, but Zelda is going to clean house. BG3 might get a nomination, but I can’t imagine it beating Zelda.

While I've never played Zelda or Final Fantasy, nor do I even remotely care about both franchises, but I would be shocked if BG3 has a bigger fanbase than either franchise.

I'm not a fan but all those far eastern games are having a renaissance and are storming the game world. Heck, even my significant other is obssesivly playing Genshin Impact. When I watched the new Zelda gameplay I legit thought it's the previous one... I guess they figured "if it works, why change it?" Like I said - people seem to love open worlds in games. Puzzling to me, but can't argue with the numbers.

It is another niche game because the souls-like games were niche games till Elden Ring. So, if BG3 is going to be so incredible I hope and I was thinking...why not? Elden Ring was anything but niche. It broke out into mainstream and was their best selling game by far and was purposefully designed to be welcoming to newcomers. It's also in many ways by far the easiest and least frustrating soulsborne game they ever made. You have ten ways to tuesday to trivialize most of the game, which was true for the older ones but it's doubly true here. Let's be realistic... there's a good chance BG3 will be my GOTY, but it's not going to win against Starfield unless that's a Redfall-level flop and definitely not against Tears of the Kingdom. It's basically Breath of the Wild vs Persona 5 all over again, lol, and as widely beloved Persona 5 breaking out instead of the somewhat more niche JRPG genre audience, it still lost.
