There are ten companions, six of which are origin characters.

Eight out of ten companions are all elves of one sort or another or humans. The other two are a demon elf (sorry, tiefling) and a githyanki. For the origin characters, it's four out of six being humans or elves, with the tiefling and the githyanki. Githyanki is cool and all, but the short races (and orcs and dragonborn) don't really get an option. Well, there's the Dark Urge, but that's shared with everyone and awesome as it looks, having that as basically the only option for half the races (short ones, dragonborn, half-orc) kind of feels a bit like those races got the shaft (which was probably dug by dwarves in the first place!).

So please Larian, for any future titles or expansion, please show some love to the sturdier races in the form of origin characters and companions.

Humans in fantasy REALLY need to stop hogging all the space.

I think that's alright as long as it's not to exclusion. In this game it's mostly the elves though: Astarion, Halsin, Jaheira, Minthara and Shadowheart are all one kind of elf or another. That's half of all companions.

It is exclusion. It isn't diverse which in 2023 is unacceptable.

Dwarves. We need dwarves.

As punishment, I'm gonna play a racist dwarf that kills all non dwarf companions but otherwise is a goody two shoes. Lmao

I agree, there needs to be more diversity. I had so hoped for a short race companion ( like the datamined Helia or Barcus for example) .

Short races have a whole host of issues, especially camera positioning and head focus during dialogue.

Its a ton of extra work for no real benefit.

Sigh ...

This starts to feel kinda old. :-/
Once again ... this would be good argument, if there was no way to have Short PC ...
But there is.

What does that mean?
Yes, that means that "camera positionin and head focus during dialogue" ... HAVE to be done anyway. -_-

I still dont understand why cant we change Race for our hirelings. frown
Lets us play Githyanki as racist as they trully are! frown

As Rag said, they have to do the extra work anyway and what do you mean ' no real benefit'? The benefit is more companion diversity and people explicitly asked for dwarf, halfling and Gnome companions.

i agree, in addition i would love to see some expansions with more exotic races as origin characters, i know larian used githyanki for that, but anyone outside of D&D would see a githyanki as an alien green elf... tiefling.. red elf with demon tail and horn... so.. nothing special... but adding an Aarakocra or a Centaur, maybe Satyr for sure... as origin characters would break paradigms... you don't see these races as companions in many 3d games... let me try to remember some game.... hmm...

Which would almost sound a reasonable argument, if not for the case that you can still use a Disguise spell and turn into whatever type of shorty and the camera needs to adapt to it anyway.

Party control in Baldur's Gate 3 is a complete mess that begs to be addressed. SAY NO TO THE TOILET CHAIN

I wanted a dwarf, gnome, halfling party galeworried
After experiencing some tremendous RP from dwarves and gnomes on Arelith PW built on Neverwinter Nights, I was really pining for a proper dwarf companion. I truly hope we get an expansion that adds dwarven, gnomish and halfling companions. Someone needs to complain about the poor construction methods, go into lengthy discussions about mining opportunities, and spout dwarven sayings and curses.

Yes!

But while, as someone who is also desperate for some more shorter race representation in our party, I'm delighted to see more voices calling for it, as a mod I feel compelled to point out that this is a topic that's already covered in this thread so we should probably not have another one just yet.
