I have an older machine and don t know if it can play bg3. Is there any demo files for download, for example, only include up to character creation section, that can install and test if the machine can run bg3 smoothly?

I don't think there is one. But what kind of system do you have? The requirements did increase in February but they still aren't too onerous. You should be good with 16GB of RAM, 4 cores/8 threads, and a reasonable graphics card as long as the game is on an SSD.

In it's current untested state the game doesn't run smooth during the release demonstration event so it's unlikely to run smooth on anything else

The hiccups during the Panel from Hell were apparently caused by the streaming setup. As far as Press and Youtubers who were attending have said, it ran really smooth, but they probably played on quite beefy machines.
