- Fair and reasonable. High level D&D characters are extremely powerful.

Swen: "Actually there's a strong push within the company now to consolidate in size, because we grew much more than we wanted to."
- Press F for the Larian employees who are going to get laid off.

But yeah, overall a solid interview.
Hell of a way to learn your job is on the line lol

I know what the reason for the decision was. They never made a secret of it. We've been talking about it for three years at this point. "Too much time and work for something we don't consider too important".
I simply disagree with it, and think they spent a lot of that same time and work on plenty of other things that were far less valuable to me. "Playable Origins", just to name one.

P.S. Dynamic lighting is a thing, by the way.

The fact that people are already talking about DLCs weeks before the game release is a testament to how great the early access was. Brace yourself guys, we already have hundreds of hours to pour into BG3 before running out of content!

I just saw, that I had 800 hours in EA in the last two years. That is more time, I spent in some finished games, so I already think, I spent my money well.

As for Day and Night: it really would have been nice for more immersion. It's not gamebreaking ( again: 800 hours), but more a nice to have.

I hope they are willing to license the engine for another team to build more DnD games if they don't want to.

That will probably ALSO be up to WOTC, to an extent.
On a side note. In one of their previous Fextralife videos the guy when questioned about mod said "I talked to them and I have the impression that Larian absolutely want to see mods proliferate, but it's not entirely up to them".
Implying that they probably need for WOTC to give the OK about it.

Yeah and it doesn't overcome the stylistic and storytelling differences of the sunlight behind one characters head at sunset or the other's at sunrise. Those make for very different cinematic experiences especially when you include the metaphoric aspects of environment and lighting used to tell stories.

lol, was thinking that too.

Overall, good interview, Swen is much more grounded and not so obnoxious when he's simply just talking about what he loves, and not trying to impress an audience. I know people like the memes/spectacle, but this is more my style.

It made me stop, too. But I think by "consolidation" he just means sticking at the size they are now and getting better at operating as a company of that size (it must have been really tricky to adjust to on the fly), rather than shrinking again. At least, for the sake of the people who have joined Larian over the course of BG3 development, I hope so!

Doubt it’s all that, some jobs will be eliminated. However, the way he speaks is that they had to get larger is because of lack of experience in some areas. Now that their core team has gotten their hands dirty, they can do much more with less.

Also, those jobs that are eliminated are likely contracted positions that termed out at end of production. So those guys knew ahead of time they were temps. Hopefully anyway…

Oh no Swen, never meet your heroes!

Ok, but just don't give him a job. He may try to sell your company to EA when no one is looking. :P
