He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster.

I never liked Dragonlance outside of the Heroes of the Lance.
The whole setting felt too devoted to the novels, as if there wasn't much room left for players. Whereas Forgotten Realms felt like more of an open world with vast expanses to explore and adventure throughout.

Would it be so bad to stay in the Forgotten Realms? There's so much to explore, and most of it hasn't reached electronic media.

I haven't played tabletop D & D since the mid-80s. Played the games like Pool of Radiance on the Apple IIe.
Anyway, are there lands outside of The Forgotten Realms on the world where that's set? Or is the Forgotten Realms the entire setting? What makes them Forgotten?
I remember Greyhawk which is I guess a totally different "world "? And Ravenloft. Others too
So I guess to answer the question maybe other parts of The Forgotten Realms? I don't know.

So I guess to answer the question maybe other parts of The Forgotten Realms? I don't know. The planet is called Abeir-Toril. The continent where this game and most FR content occurs is Faerun. The region is the Sword Coast. I don’t think Forgotten Realms is ever referenced within the setting and it’s just the name of the campaign setting, but I could be wrong.

The premise is that, long ago, the Earth and the world of the Forgotten Realms were more closely connected. As time passed, the inhabitants of planet Earth have mostly forgotten about the existence of that other world – hence the name Forgotten Realms.

I don't think they've exhausted the Forgotten Realms ...

I don't think they've exhausted the Forgotten Realms ... They've only scratched the surface. Most of the games released that take place in the FR happen to be along the sword coast. Give us Thay, the Dales (cleric quintet?), The Anauroch, the Moonshaes, Maztica, the jungles of Chult, Kara tur, everything around the Sea of Fallen stars has history, Halruua (with flying ships!) There so many settings left to explore

Well, not to be the nitpicky nerd here, but because I can..... We went to Thay in BG2EE, The Anauroch in IWD:TotLM, Chult in IWD2 and NWN2: Storm of Zehir. Not that I wouldn't go there again
Fear my wrath, for it is great indeed.

Not that I wouldn't go there again Thay in BG2:EE - Sure but it's easily missable since it's a sidequest of an EE companion (that people tend to hate for some reason...). Some good fights though. The Anauroch in TotLM - I honestly think very, very few people have played through this. Coincidentaly, I did finish it last week. It's nothing more than a side little adventure. Chult in IWD2 - Nice, but again nothing more than a dungeon and a boss. A quick in and out. NWN2: Storm of Zehir - never played it sadly

Dark Sun or Eberron.
First is true dark fantasy of D&D Seconds is like Arcane show, but entire continent is like this.
Honestly though, i would trade all of it for Golarion. And not as much for setting itself, but for amazing character build possibilities of Pathfinder 2nd edition. Classic 5e bored me years ago with super limited class/subclass options, and overall limited system design. And over the years Wizards barely published anything exciting. And to added insult, instead of making 6th edition, they decided to "revision" 5th one with their D&D One...

Planescape would be cool. Easily the most interesting D&D setting IMO.
But what I really want is not more D&D, but Divinity 3 (not Divinity Original Sin 3, but a sequel to the Dragon Knight Saga).

The whole setting felt too devoted to the novels, as if there wasn't much room left for players. Whereas Forgotten Realms felt like more of an open world with vast expanses to explore and adventure throughout. The Annotated Chronicles come to life would satisfy a lot of bad cartoon feelings. If they were to read the novels and bring those words to a game screen, it could really be an immensely challenging setting full of conflict, romance, strife, despair and discovery. The characters built by Weiss and Hickman are destined for much more than pages of a book. They simply did it too well. With LArians own writing and character development approaches we would have one hell of a time side by side the Heroes. All the novels under Dragonlance create one hell of a world that is in my opinion a great next step from FR. The towers of sorcery, wayreth forest, the elven lands, Minotaurs, Solamnia, Solace....and on and on I can go. As for gameplay in the setting, drop the flying dragon random encounters and we're good.

Yeah, I wasn't saying we've seen all that we wanted. Baldur's Gate 4 to get to higher levels and be the BG2 to this BG1? Yeah, I'll play it. But, truth be told, I'm never too fond of the ultra high level play. 5-10 is more or less the D&D sweet spot. After 12 things always become godly and way too weird. Throne of Bhaal, whilst tactically fun, didn't do it for me much. You know, what with the town guards being an army of level 15 fighters and the Pocket Plane and all the weirdness. Then again, I'm always an advocate of low-magic settings over high-magic ones. Things like the Planes and the history of the Gods and the Blood War and all that always just bores me. I like infiltrating a real castle overrun with orcs, or beset by a an evil baron with just human henchmen and such.

Spelljammer for me. It would actually open up the opportunity to see various different worlds. We could visit Krynn and Greyhawk in it for example.

Unpopular opinion I guess but...hopefully Larian will leave DnD alone from now on. I'd much rather see Tactical Games Adventures getting the full license and economical support to do a game on this scale.
