I suppose it comes down to how you define romance in this context. If you define it as getting to have sex with a character then sure, it's a lie. If you define it as having a romantic relationship with a character then I don't think it's a lie, since I believe you only sort of start the potential for a relationship at that point. In most games romance is in the form of courtship, really. The process leading up to a relationship and that's basically the end, nothing more happens. BG3 is actually trying to do something deeper here, which I applaud. Letting you progress quite far into the courtship by the end of act 1 and leaving a lot of room to continue to grow and shape the relationship.

Every RPG has that companion. In Dargon Age there was Morrigan, in BG2 we had Edwin, in Neverwnter Nights 2 there was Bishop. Probably a lot more.

Think we played a different game? Name one such situation, I don't recall anyone becoming "verbally abusive".

How can you tell? Didn't you just say you haven't played the whole game yet? Shadowheart ended the EA pretty friendly with all my characters, so... maybe it's just you?

Do YOU spell out all your secrets to strangers? Get to know them, all of them end the EA telling you at least a decend chunk of their secrets. If you, you know, talk to them and be nice.

The thread is likely on step 1 of 3 to being locked. It's not productive to "prove someone wrong" on the nature of a partly released character. For all intents and purposes, many companions are Schrödinger's arsehole.

For the nature of first impressions: people who played an elf in Inquisition first tend to have a *much* better opinion of Solas. This is because he starts out extremely racist. It's legitimately his character development. People who didn't do one (1) thing Sera disliked before a first conversation will never understand how much of an unreasonable bitch she can be.

This could be a coding issue. Still, it is how strong opinions happen, mildly put. Others' first experience wasn't necessarily yours. Opinions are victim to the psychological phenomenon of "anchoring": fallacious through need of a frame of reference. The first pieces of information are weighted too highly.

I am not really going to respond much to your post as you are just a piece of shit, but I actually addressed many of the times they were verbally abusive, in a later statement in this thread you never bothered reading because you don't care to dig just project and belittle, a lot like the trash companions in this game, there isn't one companion, they are all like that, if you ask any of them questions they start to act like you are stupid and treat you as such saying passive aggressive shit to deter you, and I am far from the only one that has noticed it, I never asked for the perfect waifu.

I want to make it clear that everything I said was because none of the criticisms levied against my statement were valid or made in good faith.

The person literally ignored anything positive I said like me acknowledging I know it's EA and how this is only a gripe for that, they ignored the entire paragraph where I went on and on about loving Larian and their games.

They selected only the most negative of what I had to say and challenged it not with valid criticism but with more negativity.

Which is fine, we are all free to do as as we will, and I meet that with more negativity.

People have different opinions about companions and we can discuss that normally. I for example find Viconia much more aggressive than Shadowheart. She doesn't really vibe with me, same with Morrigan, another fan favorite, I can't stand.
Apart from Astarion, who I find problematic to even justify to put him in the party, I think the companions are ok. They all have their dark secrets apart from Lae'zel, who is very upfront from the start, but mostly I find it realistic, that a group of people, whose only common goal is dealing with the tadpole, would not instantly trust each other and open up. I was surprised, that Shadowheart tells you about Shar that soon in the gameplay, given how big a deal Shar worshipping is.
