Apologies if this has been done before, but couldn’t find an obvious answer on a search.
It’s occurred to me that Withers is so incredibly useful he’s borderline essential, but you could very easily just miss him completely. Is this a problem? Will he turn up at some point if you don’t find him? Or is it fine to just never pick him up? I haven’t tried without him.

I expected a simple answer. Case closed.

On a side note Anyone tried to kill withers? What happens then There’s YouTube videos. As of patch 9, he is immortal and makes fun of you for attacking him.

In one play through I got myself killed on the starting beach. Jumped into the deep river.
Anyway, Withers showed up right there to raise me. He commented on the absurdity of it, then left for my camp.

On a side note Anyone tried to kill withers? What happens then Prior to Patch 9 he is immortal and invulnerable and he woops you good. But you can steal from him to your heart's content still. He generates about 1k gold per long rest. or you can use him as a vendor. "Everybody loves Withers!"

I just hope his introduction in the full game isn't quite so jarring. I honestly thought he was a EA revive bot that was going to be removed because of how awkwardly he was introduced.

Hes not that bad if you wake him up from his crypt first. While I like the scene in the crypt, I hope they change a bit what he does after it and how we interact with him. You meet this apparently very powerful undead guy, he helps himself to your camp, offers to help you but refuses to elaborate why, and just stays there doing nothing in case you need his services. Same goes for the oathbreaker knight, I think it'd be more appropriate if instead they gave you an item you could use to summon them whenever you require their services. Having these 2 powerful beings just idling away the hours at your camp sounds a bit ridiculous when you think about it.

That's definitely what it is, it's this "WHAT IS THE WORTH OF A MORTAL'S SOUL???" (hint: none of the answers matter), and then teleports to your camp, refusing to say anything of note, but conveniently supply very important game mechanics.

I wouldn't be surprised if his question carries big weight that pays off sometime in Act 3. At least, that's what I would expect from quality writing; set-up and pay-off.

If he’s actually Jergal he probably just doesn’t give a shit and probably has nowhere else to go and nothing to do except follow your party around.

If he's actually Jergal than I'd be worried silly because Jergal is *not* a good guy, and according to 'word of god' He's behind basically every major catastrophe that's befallen Toril since Karsus's fall. Seeing him involved in a storyline that heavily involves the dead three would be 'mild' cause for concern.

In community update 21 Larian specifically says the shapeshifter could be anywhere...even pretending to be someone else in your camp. Although I must admit it would be a lot of fun to see Jergal and hear his takes on everything lol.

Boredom.” Anyway, would be interesting if Orin could be randomised every play through and could be shapeshifted into your love interest. A blow straight to the heart.

As per Ed Greenwood himself, Jergal is the most formidable villain in the setting, because he's 'already won'. He only steps in from time to time to nudge things along (if you consider stuff like the Time of Troubles, Karsus's folly, and the Spellplague to be 'nudges') He operates through unwitting pawns and fallguys, and is a really patient guy/bug-thing. Which is what makes him so dangerous. If the Dead Three are involved, and he's in our camp and wants something from *us*, then that could be bad for us, as well as Toril. Or he could be bored, that too.
