Peace be with you,
I am running LM version 21.2 with Cinnamon. I have searched for a similar error, but didn't find one and when I searched on the full string of "running install script", the search function for the forum hung. Here is My system information:

I was able to install BG3 after forcing Proton compatibility, but when I attempt to launch the game it reports "Launching Running install script (Microsoft DirectX)" and hangs there. No dialog spawns and there is no error message. I have tried both Proton 8.0.2 and Proton Experimental. I searched ProtonDB and have tried all of the following launch options:

eval $( echo WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”cchromaeditorlibrary64=” gamemoderun mangohud "%command%" | sed "s/Launcher/LariLauncher.exe'.*/bin/bg3.exe'/" )

eval $( echo gamemoderun "%command%" | sed "s/Launcher\/LariLauncher.exe'.*/bin\/bg3_dx11.exe'/" )

eval $( echo WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”cchromaeditorlibrary64=” gamemoderun mangohud "%command%" | sed "s/Launcher\/LariLauncher.exe'.*/bin\/bg3_dx11.exe'/" )

gamemoderun %command%

plus a couple others I cannot find/remember right now. Nothing has had any noticeable affect. Any/all assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, in advance.

I don't know a thing about running games on linux. Does larian support this, or are you using some kind of Windows emulator? I could well be misremembering, but I don't recall any mention of linux support, and I don't see any mention of it on the steam store page

no the game doesn't support Linux and installing DX is a Windows thing so thats why it stopped there
an emulator could get the game running locally but not across a network so no cross saves or multiplayer

Luke Skywalker: I don't, I don't believe it.
Yoda: That is why you failed.

If you can afford it, GeForce NOW is a viable option. I don't know if they have a client for Linux, but it also works in a browser

Peace, colinl8,
Steam supports play under Linux through Proton. That is how the Steam Deck runs most games. I'm confident there is an easy solution to get Steam to skip/ignore the DX install script, but I'm a new Linux user and don't know the proper incantation. I know, from checking ProtonDB, that user Linux users are able to run BG3. I've tried several launch option strings, see above, but none of them have had any affect. I've even reinstalled, hoping the most recent BG3 patch and Proton 8.0.3 would sort it out, but no joy. I am hoping that some other Linux user with stronger juju will read this and gift Me their knowledge. Thanks for replying.

Peace, colinl8,
As I said, I cannot get the launcher to instantiate at all. I click Play and the "running install script" message comes up, adjacent to the Play button, and then nothing happens. I never get the chance to select Vulcan or DX. I never get a launcher.

James,
I was having the exact same issue. In fact, I found your post when I was trying to fix the same issue. The game was working on Linux mint 20.3. I got a new HD so I did a fresh install Mint 21.1 and of steam. Then I was getting the exact same error as you. I did two things to correct the issue. First I installed the Microsoft runtime files for Linux (which I don't think did anything to fix the problem). I rolled back my Nvidia drivers from 5.35 back to 5.25. Running "Driver Manager" in Mint is a very easy way to roll back proprietary drivers. I also uninstalled the game, browsed to the game directory and deleted the left over scripts too (Not sure this did much). Reinstalled the game with Proton Experimental and after that the game works flawlessly, without any of the launch options (though I did wind up using --skip-launcher because launchers are pointless).

I BELIEVE that the issue has to do with the game trying to use older versions of the Vulkan drivers than the Nvidia driver is trying to use. There is probably a way to force the game to use the right Nvidia-centric drivers, but this was the easier fix. I hope it helps.

Thank you for this post and the solution above.
I did exactly what you said Masaedis, I installed .net using the scripted install, then rolled back my NVidia drivers to 5.25, one of those two things got me past the "running install script (Microsoft DirectX)" message.

So glad that it helped. Now just keep your fingers crossed it still works after the full game is released in a few days.

For informational purposes, the full initial GOG release including multiplayer seems to work in Arch and Wine (8.13) just running bg3.exe (Vulkan; have not tried DX) from bin folder. This did not require installing the redistributables or changing driver or running setup: Distributions can be manually extracted from InnoSetup installers with something like innosetup -d gameDir ./setup*.exe. Data/Localization/language.lsx can be edited in some way to change language, or moved/renamed to default to English.
