As the game fast approaches I have some questions and concerns about multiplayer that I hope you fine people can answer. We have a large group of 7 people who play a weekly 5e game, and most are excited to play BG3. We know larian in its finite wisdom decided to limit groups to 4 players, but beyond that...

1. Are multiplayer games designed like Divinity 2, where the characters are baked into the save file? Ive seen some posts that say that everyone needs to be present when a game is made, you all create and add your characters at the same time, no takebacksies.

2. Once a game is running, is is possible to switch out players in a game? Or are you stuck with what you start with? Could you drop out and try a different character?

3. If a player drops out or cannot play for a time, can you remove them from the party and add NPCs?

4. Do we know if players can take on the roles of Mercs and join an existing party?

TLDR, how flexible is the multiplayer system to accommodate a number of players who may want to drop in and out of a game?

1. I think in the last Panel from Hell they said that drop-in multiplayers could create a brand new character then and there, regardless of where in the campaign the other player(s) are. They mention it around the point where they added another player with the PS5 pad iirc.

2. Characters can be reassigned amongst players, yes.

3. Unsure if non-Origin characters can be dumped into the camp.

4. Any of the party members can be assigned to any player it seems like.

Thanks for the reply. I may have missed that part of the Panel from hell, I will go back and see if I can find it.

I think this is accurate, or at least I am hoping it is as well. It would be a such a huge deal if somebody drops out of a campaign - which happens a LOT - or if you have a player who is problematic and the group doesn't want to continue with them but not lose the campaign.

I mean you could respec that toon of course but you probably can't change Race/Name and may not be able to change the look. People really like playing their own characters.

This is one of my concerns. While our DnD group is 7, there is a core part, myself and 2 others, who are pretty hardcore. We played the hell out of Div2, and I expect the 3 of us will go nuts on BG3. The rest of the group are a bit more casual, and I can absolutely see someone join us, and then not be able to play as much as the other 3. What do you do in those situations, just lug that character around like unwanted baggage while playing without that person? I really hope we have more flexibility in bringing people in and out!

Yes, just make sure you or one of the Hardcore folks are the ones Hosting. Save files can be copied to another player but it's a process and I have only done it a few times. Would be nice to have a tool to facilitate that.
