I am looking for attack related self-buffs or other autonomous ways to ensure a hit. I plan my character around a toolkit that needs a reliable way to land one particular spell attack once in a while.

Restrictions: no more than 4 levels dip into any class besides fighter.

What I already thought about:

- War God's Blessing/Guided Strike
- Tides of Chaos

Any ideas?

I'm not sure what spell you mean, but if it involves a ranged weapon attack the Archery Fighting style is a plus 2.

If you go sorcerer you can use True Strike with Quicken spell to get advantage.

Knocking them proneor asleep gets you advantage in melee range

Paralyzing them gets you autocrits

Bless is a D4, bardic inspiration is a D6 (or more), both of which you can have other characters use on you.

Heat metal their shield to get them to drop it (not sure if this works in BG)

Arrow of Acid gives them -2 AC

There are probably more, but those are the ones off the top of my head.

Thanks benbaxter.

I am talking about thorn whip here. I figured that this is a cool spell to use only against the enemies who are up high - pulling them down for falling damage, but it is rather difficult to ensure a hit due to a meek range and -2 low ground penalty. The range I'll overcome with Spell Sniper, but the hit chance I haven't yet settled on.

By 'autonomous' I meant those you can perform within one turn. So bardic inspiration works, as a reaction, but bless doesn't, because it needs to be cast in advance. Same with arrows and other specific conditions.

If you're going solo, then bardic inspiration wont work either.

Which class are you using thorn whip from?

I am planning on playing a fighter and getting thorn whip from the Spell Sniper feat. I am not going solo, so bardic inspiration is a valid suggestion!

For clarity, bardic inspiration is a bonus action by another character that you can then use on your turn. Lore bards can use cutting words as a reaction, bot that wont give you an attack bonus.

If you are okay with having a bard set you up on their turn, then a Faerie Fire (action) and Bardic inspiration (bonus action) combo would set you up perfectly. And it would make cleaning up what's left of them easier, too.

Oh and make sure you have your Wisdom pumped up as high as possible. I think picking it from the Druid list is the only way to get thorn whip from spell sniper.

Yeah, I thought same, so I am going with 16 WIS from the start and will go +2 ASI later on as well, by level 12 probably. The spell is situational so I won't be pressing hard for it from the get go. Thanks for your help, I'll consider a bard dip for one of the companions.

the only sure way is magic missile and even that manages to miss when half asleep people use it without looking at the flight path

Luke Skywalker: I don't, I don't believe it.
Yoda: That is why you failed.
